Kargast brings mysteries and conspiracies aplenty to PC and console

kargast

If it’s a dark and twisted narrative you are looking for, complete with some meta takes on the state of RPGs as we know them, then look no further than Kargast!

Releasing right now on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC platforms, Kargast plunges you into a surreal tale of a child on the unfortunate brink of death. Our friend seems to be going through some pretty heavy mental torture, and it is this through which we must navigate, facing off against a number of nightmarish, deformed creatures, hidden in equally tormentous environments. It’s all pretty heavy stuff, save only for the semi-satirical takes that Kargast makes on narrative RPGs.

The game itself contains a small amount of light RPGing, especially as you take on monsters with Pokemon-esque turn-based combat (Attack, Skill, Flee, and all that jazz). As well as using a multitude of powers against foes, there are an array of directions that your decisions can take the story of Kargast. At first glance, fans of Undertale will feel right at home, both in a gameplay sense, and visually.

A full list of features in Kargast, as per the game’s Steam page, includes:

  • Explore strange worlds with odd inhabitants
  • Lite-RPG elements and strange battles
  • Authentic synthwave soundtrack that fits the atmosphere.
  • Original art with thoughtfully crafted locations.
  • A naive protagonist.
  • The ability to make friends, unlike real life.

So, I repeat: dark and twisted narrative, with some finger-pointing at RPG stories? Kargast is the one for you, and you can pick up a copy via the Xbox Store (on Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One) for £7.99. Alternatively, the game can be found on PS5, PS4, Switch and PC.

Game Description:

“You just woke up but… oh, wait! This is not right! Everything seems weird and.. where did everyone go?” Kargast is a dark narrative exploration game with light RPG elements and branching endings. It tells a surreal and semi-satirical story of an unwell child on the brink of death, and his adventures through his surreal, cryptic surroundings.. You must guide him through a place of torment, confront the unknown and make vital choices along the way. Travel through dark and mysterious environments with your shiny little companion, fight your way through dozens of odd and malformed creatures, and uncover what strange truths lay hidden before it’s too late.

I'm an avid gamer who will play pretty much anything... but stick an open world or adventure game in front of me and I'm more than happy.
