Beyond knowing how to put up a good show, Devolver is no stranger to recognizing a game with potential. And Carrion is no doubt one of the more unique horror games you’ll play this year. We’re all pretty much used to shooting zombies in the head, taking pictures of ghosts or escaping a relentless pursuer. But in Carrion, you are the pursuer. Carrion sees you take control of a malformed creature and escape a research lab. Using tentacles, you’ll experience what it’s like to grapple across the ceiling or slither through tight ventilation shafts.
As the creature, you’ll prey on vulnerable scientists and armed soldiers. Surprise your victims by tearing down doors or use echolocation to instil fear in them. Carrion doesn’t hold back on violence and gore; you can rip humans apart, tear off their limbs in a bloody fountain of red and munch on their bony remains as if they’re a handful of Oreos. Kill and assimilate them a la John Carpenter’s The Thing to grow bigger. Breaking DNA chambers will bestow you with new abilities to help in combat or to proceed through previously inaccessible areas.
