DONTNOD continue their small-town tales of folk with exceptional talents with Twin Mirror. This time, the hero is a little older, the tone a little darker, and the adventure more deductive. You’re an investigative reporter, researching a car crash where the details don’t add up, and dark elements are at the bottom of it all. Twin Mirror is out now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5 and PC via Steam.
Plenty of games have tried to turn the solving of cases into a fully fledged game. The Sherlock Holmes games, The Council, Agatha Christie games, Chicken Police, even some hidden object and visual novel games have given it a bash. It’s a tough gig, though, as they tend to be too linear.
Twin Mirror has a plan. For one, there’s your character’s ‘Mind Palace’: an ability Sam Higgs has to pause time and populate the crime scene with glass-like entities. You can move them about and interact with them to find out exactly what happened. And then there’s ‘The Double’, your character’s inner dialogue, who can be chatted to, and will seem to have a life of his own. He’ll hinder you just as much as help you.
Your decisions will ripple across the rest of the adventure. Similar to DONTNOD’s other narrative odysseys, there are various branches to the storytelling, and a poor deduction or reaction will lead to doors opening or closing further along. In the case of Twin Mirror, you will be determining just how much of himself that Sam is willing to sacrifice – whatever that means.
If DONTNOD adventures tell us anything, the story will take us to places we won’t expect, and there will be tears along the way. Tell Me Why was a real return to form, so we’re hoping it bodes well for Twin Mirror too. It should do, if only because we’ve included it in our games to keep an eye on through December article.
Features include:
- GRIPPING PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER – Lose yourself in a rich, intricate storyline anchored in the gritty reality of small-town America. As his investigation progresses, Sam will uncover a web of intrigue that winds through Basswood’s evocative locations and draws in its colorful residents.
