Aw yiss, we can still hear the soundtrack of Katamari Damacy in our heads. The ba-da-dahs of the main theme, the squeaky title tune, the monotone boops that play when the King of All Cosmos talks. Ah, it’s enough to take us all back to 2004. Except wait, Katamari Damacy REROLL is taking us back to 2004, as we’re getting the original (and best) Katamari, reheated and rerolled for a modern audience. As the King of All Cosmos would say: “Very princely indeed. Such skill. And such class. Dazzling. We feel a swoon coming on.”
Katamari Damacy REROLL is out now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4 and PS5. It’s been out for donkey’s years on Switch and PC.
If you’ve never played a Katamari game before well, chickadee, you have a mighty treat upcoming. You play the Prince, one of many children of the King of All Cosmos, and he wants you to please him by creating planets. This is done in a very scientific manner: you grab a katamari, a knobbly and sticky ball, and you roll it over things that are smaller than you to pick them up. Gather up enough stuff and your ball will get bigger, meaning you can pick up bigger things. Such is the circle of life that is Katamari Damacy!
We don’t have a huge amount of information on whether this is a direct port of the REROLL that hit Switch and PC earlier last year. Even if it is, that means we will still get improved controls, a refined difficulty curve, HD graphics and a multiplayer mode for knocking balls together.
This is a game that you should at least try, as its soundtrack, bonkers dialogue and characters, and wonderful art style are something to behold. Go forth, Prince!
