It was back in July when we first had the chance to take in Skater XL, with a hands-off, online chat with the development team at Easy Day Studios, flipping and tricking boards and more. Much of the talk that day surrounded new maps, new gear and the opportunity for players on all platforms to enjoy the power of the modding scene. Well now, a few months after first release, it’s looking good in terms of those mods, with new maps and gear getting set to hit all platforms in December.

Easy Day Studios have today confirmed plans to integrate community created mods into the base Skater XL experience in December. Now this may not be a big deal to those grabbing a PC board, but for us on Xbox One and PS4, it’s a big shift in momentum, and one that may just be enough to drag Skater XL up to a level where it can compete with the likes of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1_2 Remastered.

The plans are detailed in the latest trailer to roll out from Easy Day, and this focuses on the first drop that makes maps and gear – all created by modders – easily accessible on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. This community content integration will be powered by Mod.io, beginning in December 2020 and followed by a rather steady stream of player-created maps and gear from there on out.

“Skater XL has always been driven by its passionate community, and we have been blown away by the creativity and technical abilities of our devoted group of mod creators,” states Dain Hedgpeth, Co-Founder at Easy Day Studios. “To be able to introduce these mods to players on all platforms is a huge step forward, not just for Skater XL, but for games evolving towards being open, creative platforms.”

The latest trailer can be found below these words, with it focusing efforts on the following community created maps:

  • Riverfern – Created by Taitjames from Sydney, Australia, this map features a mash-up of real life skate spots found in the land down under.
  • Quebec Skate Plaza – Created by AlexLaskka from Quebec City, Canada, this map is a highly accurate replica of the well known skate park found in the great white north.
  • Applewood Park – Created by ROARTEX89 from Kent, England, this map caters to all skating styles with huge stair sets, its own skatepark, hubba ledges, techy manual pads and more.

With our full review of Skater XL mentioning that a lack of severe lack of content was a huge negative for the game on Xbox One, we can’t wait to see these new mods hit home. Let us know what you think once you’ve watched that trailer. And if you want to pick up a copy of the game, the usual digital stores will sort you out. And yes, the Xbox Store is our favoured choice.
