RNG in Games

0

RNG is an integral component of videogames and casino online games. It stands for “random number generator,” and it’s simply a computer algorithm that produces a different number every time it’s applied.

It helps to generate the outcomes of random actions in video and casino games. RNGs often undergo rigorous testing to ensure non-predictability and fairness in the outcome of games.

But not all games depend on random number generators to generate outcomes. These include rhythm games such as Guitar Hero and Dance Revolution. Read on to learn more about RNG in games.

Purpose of RNG in Gaming

RNG plays a major role in attracting new players and encouraging casual players to keep playing. If winning a game depended exclusively on skills, chances are the more experienced player would always win.

Games that include RNG ensure the weaker players win some games too. This prevents them from getting discouraged and quitting. RNG also ensures there’s no one dominant strategy in a game. It keeps the game interesting by making the game feel different every time you play.

Types of RNG

There are two main types of RNG: hardware RNG and pseudo RNG. While hardware RNG generates real random sets of numbers, pseudo RNG utilizes a seed number to determine the next number through an algorithm. The gaming industry uses Pseudo RNGs because they don’t need any external data to generate an output.

RNG Manipulation

It is possible to manipulate RNGs into delivering a specific outcome. But most people don’t have the skills to do so. And most casinos understand they can make more money in the long term by upholding fairness.

All gaming companies and casinos must have their software tested by a third party. Still, this hasn’t stopped some casino employees from tampering with RNG systems for their selfish gains.

In 2008, BLR software allegedly manipulated its games to increase the house edge at World Wide Wagering, an online gaming company.

Steps Taken To Ensure RNG Fairness

We’ve already mentioned that an independent third party must test the software of all licensed gaming companies and casinos. But what kind of testing do they perform?

Third-party testing services may include RNG evaluation, ongoing RNG or game payout verification, betting exchange evaluation, poker system audits, and comprehensive security audits.

If an RNG passes the test, the third party certifies it, meaning it is random.

Final Thoughts

RNG is an important component of gameplay in different types of games, including card games, modern puzzle games, and even multiplayer games. It is effective in keeping games unpredictable and interesting.

Many people think RNG is useful for offering variety and keeping games fresh. Variety plays an integral role in strategy games. Players can lose interest in a game where they have to make the same moves repeatedly.

Despite its great attributes, some competitive gamblers feel that RNG undermines skill. But, thanks to RNG, an amateur has a chance to win against an experienced professional. RNG promotes fairness by bridging the skill gap between players.
