We can’t pretend that the Strategic Mind series is a set of games that we’ve been wowed by. But over the months the instalments have got slightly better. Can the release of Strategic Mind: Spirit of Liberty on Xbox prove to be a franchise high point?

Available right now on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S is Strategic Mind: Spirit of Liberty. It’s priced at £24.99 and should be seen as the latest in Klabater’s brand push.

A couple of campaigns

With the likes of Strategic Mind: Spectre of Communism and Strategic Mind: Fight for Freedom having released previously in 2023, Spirit of Liberty should already be able to take some kind of hold. The opportunity to play through a couple of campaigns – historical and alternate history – should make it even more exciting.

  • Historical campaign: Play through a number of missions throughout the 1939-1945 timeline, spanning three wars: Winter War, Continuation War, and Lapland War. The historical campaign will have smaller-scale but action-packed operations, covering all of the iconic historical battles. Complete numerous objectives grounded in history and narrated by a number of historical characters.
  • Alternate history campaign: Play a shorter campaign with larger operations, centered around the “what if” events. Help the Germans take Leningrad, cut off the allied aid shipments to USSR by taking the port of Murmansk – that is only the beginning.

Playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Spirit of Liberty also drops onto PlayStation today as well. Wherever you decide to play, you’ll get to embark on a journey through Finland’s struggles during the Winter War and Continuation War.

Placing you in the shoes of the leader of the Finnish army, it’s up to you to save your homeland from total destruction. You’ll do that with tanks, troops and more in tow. But how will you take to the battlefield? Ultimately the decision is left in your hands.

Key Features

  • History Unfolds: Cinematics at the end of each operation provide a unique perspective on historical events from the point of view of important figures of the time.
  • Commander’s Arsenal: Utilize a diverse selection of historically precise vehicles, each accessible at its proper point in time. Train, equip, and hone your troops’ skills for success.
  • Legendary Heroes: Unlock heroes by meeting specific requirements. Each hero possesses a unique, powerful skill set. For example, Simo Häyhä, known as the deadliest sniper in WW2 history.
  • Strategic Headquarters: Enhance headquarters personnel’s abilities in whatever way you choose: more firepower or superior intelligence.
  • Combat Mechanics: Use advanced techniques to defeat opponents, including using lethal or nonlethal force and utilizing strategic terrain.
  • Logistics and Supply Lines: Manage limited ammo and fuel for your units, a critical aspect of operations.

Turn-based strategy awaits

If it’s turn-based historical strategy you are after, Strategic Mind: Spirit of Liberty may well suit. Grab a download from the Xbox Store right now. Or the PlayStation Store if you prefer.

We’ll look to continue our Strategic Mind reviews in the days ahead.

Strategic Mind: Spirit of Liberty on Xbox Game Description

A story from the legends, but in real history Winter War: over 500,000 Soviet soldiers attack Finland, a country with a population of 3,700,000, and the Finns drive them back, inflicting 5 times their own casualties. Continuation War: the Reds return with a total strength of 1,500,000 – almost half of the entire Finnish population – and the Finns stop them again. Finland’s survival in these two brutal wars against an enemy so vast was a true historical miracle. A miracle of heroism and valor. A miracle of the Finnish spirit of liberty. Experience heroic struggle and make tough choices You are the commander of the scarce Finnish troops.

Your only goal – to save your homeland and your people from total annihilation. Would you risk losing your experienced troops to try and capture the enemy tanks? Would you try to save the stragglers during the retreat and risk losing everyone, or cut your losses and establish a new line of defense? Would you agree to negotiate with the Soviets that had treacherously attacked you twice before?
