To celebrate the release of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled onto Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch, the design geniuses over at Numskull have used their merch expertise to launch the official Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled merchandise range, which is now available to buy from their website. The guys have been kind enough to gift us a few items from the range, and they haven’t disappointed!
For your reading pleasure (and maybe to encourage you to grab some pieces for yourself), here is a whistle-stop tour of some of the products available in the range, taking a closer look at some of the more interesting of the items available.
First things first, and arguably the centrepiece of the range, are the two T-shirts starring the hero of the franchise – Mr Crash Bandicoot himself – and a menacing depiction of one of the courses in the game, Crash Cove. Both shirts are available in sizes Small (S) to Extra Large (XL), and are made of 100% cotton for that expected comfortable feel. For a more than respectable £14.99 and £12.99 a pop, in my opinion you’d struggle to get much better in the T-shirt department…
The £14.99 charcoal grey ‘Eat the Road’ shirt puts Crash front and centre, depicting him in his traditionally chaotic state, chomping down on a spark plug and exhaust (presumably he had a ‘crash’ of his own!). Numskull have favoured a dull, distressed look, complimenting the dystopian dark greys. It’s certainly one that fits in with the minimalist fashion trend sweeping the globe.
Conversely, and the £12.99 brighter white shirt pays homage to the instantly recognisable Crash Cove from CTR. What you will expect on this piece is, again, all the action occurring in the centre, with a black and white illustration of the iconic track. Of course, the evil Dr. Neo Cortex had to get a mention on one of the shirts at least, and here we have his ugly mug looming over the silhouette of an unfortunate Crash.
Overall, and both shirts are extremely comfortable to wear, thanks to the 100% cotton, but this is pretty much a given what with the high quality of Numskull products we have seen in the past. However, even though we have had access to Large, they do seem a tad too tight for that size – we recommend you consider going the size above if you are putting in a purchase of your own. Some may also argue that the tees could be a bit more colourful, in sync with the wacky and colourful nature of Crash and co., but it must be said that the faded colours and minimalism really are the ‘in thing’ at the moment. Ultimately, though, it’s safe to say that Numskull have once again delivered on the wearable clothing front!
Next up, and the CTR Nitro-Fueled Crate Keychain/Keyring for £9.99 proves that great things come in small packages. This robust rubber item is a perfect replica of the weapon crate from the game and, while it will not contain any rockets or bombs if broken into, it will sit pretty alongside your keys, on your bag or wherever you wish to attach it. Perhaps slightly more so than the tees, this item oozes Crash, with its vibrant yellow and orange question mark adorning the sides of the crate. It definitely won’t break or snap either, with the premium quality rubber making it a durable addition to whatever and wherever it finds itself on. However, the small package definitely does not apply to the price: £9.99 for a keyring seems a little steep, especially considering the more manageable prices found in the rest of the range.
Similarly robust is the set of four coasters that are included, priced again at £9.99. In this, two resemble tyres, and have the text ‘Crash Team Racing’ emblazoned on the side, just to remind you what game you may be playing. These have a concave central design, giving it a unique 3D feel, however this shouldn’t affect the stability of your drink. Secondly, the two other coasters paint a colourful portrait of Crash, again with the title of the game in bold colours, but are instead completely flat. There’s not a huge amount more to say – they are coasters, after all – but again the high-grade silicone material and non-slip surface allow these to do their job, and they look good while doing it!
Finally, we have a set of two Crash-themed air-fresheners that are guaranteed to bring some fruity scents to your car or house for the decent price of £4.99. These both depict our favourite orange bandicoot, and bring about a distinct Wumpa fruit smell. Yes, the Wumpa fruit may not actually exist, but whatever smell the air-fresheners create is indeed fruity and quite enjoyable, although initially pretty strong. Again, this product does exactly what it says on the tin – it can’t be faulted in the practicality respect.
So, to sum it all up, the Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled range is again evidence that Numskull are the kings of the merch game. Yes, in my personal opinion the shirts could have done with a bit more colour, but of course art is subjective to no end. My only other gripe is found within some of the prices, but balance the steep value of the keyring with the hugely enticing price of the shirts, and my mind is put a bit more at rest. At the end of the day, however, we will definitely be integrating all these items into our daily lives. Drinks, bags, cars, and indeed our own chests, watch out – you’re about to get a whole lot more Crash-y!
