It is a bold opening move to tell us not to expect a story but that is just how Jetboard Joust has introduced itself. In today’s gaming world, not having a story isn’t usually seen as a positive. But Jetboard Joust isn’t concerned with today, firmly planting itself in the era of coin-operated shoot ‘em ups. Relive the spirit of spending your pocket money as Jetboard Joust releases today on Xbox and PlayStation.
Ok, Jetboard Joust isn’t completely devoid of plot. You and your jetboard must defeat waves of evil aliens who want to abduct civilians and turn them into mutants. In terms of a story, that is all you need to know.
These aliens come in all different shapes and sizes. Over 50 different types will descend upon the world and try to destroy you, including some homages to classic arcade games of the past. Just as well then that you can pack over 30 weapons to blow them all away. From the up close and personal shotgun to the more-destructive flame tornado or lightning bolt weapons, there will be no shortage of creative kills.
Plus, manage to destroy the bosses that head your way, and you can even use their attacks as your own! Good thing then that your jetboard is quite nimble as you will need all its manoeuvrability to dodge their attacks.
Jetboard Joust looks great too with a really unique pixel art style. Gameplay wise is reminiscent of the 1980s but they didn’t used to make them look this good back then.
Available to download this very moment, Jetboard Joust is priced at £7.99 on the Xbox Store. Fusing classic shoot ‘em ups with modern hardcore roguelikes, it is worthy of a look. Our review will be coming soon to help convince you either way. Keep an eye out for it. For now, let us know in the comments what you think.
