SteamWorld Build on Game Pass feels a no-brainer

Taking inspiration from the Anno series and building in some Dungeon Keeper styled city building, SteamWorld Build emerges onto Game Pass, launching on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC in the process.

From The Station and Thunderful is the hugely anticipated SteamWorld Build. A game that takes the classic SteamWorld formula, this time around we are found mixing in various other ideas too. That means for as much as you can continue your digging process underground, it’s what happens up top which is the real delight. Here, the city of your dreams may well spring up.

A new Game Pass addition

SteamWorld Build on Game Pass feels a bit of a no-brainer; if you have a subscription, you may as well use it. But frankly, even without that, we’d be flocking to establish a homestead in SteamWorld Build anyways.

It places you in the shoes of the architect of a SteamWorld mining town. With that in mind, you’ll be looking to break ground and raise houses. All in order to keep your steambot citizens fed and happy, providing some rootin’-tootin’ entertainment as you go.

But you’ll also be able to venture into the abandoned mine sitting under your town. This is rumoured to be filled with ancient tech that holds the key to escaping impending doom. By using the natural resources above ground and the abundant ores buried below, you’ll get the chance to expand your town, stimulate new residential tiers to join the quest to dig deeper, unearth untold riches and ultimately help them to hightail it off the planet! Intriguing huh?

SteamWorld Build’s above and below-ground elements have an interdependent relationship where everything you discover, mine or build feeds into what you can do when you switch from above to below, and vice versa. These cogs all fit together to create a satisfying game loop. One in which you are always making progress and are always engaged.

This is present and correct on digital storefronts for Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC. SteamWorld Build should be just at home with a controller as it is with mouse and keyboard. Of course, we’ll let you know how it does play. Our full review of the game on Xbox is on the way.

Features include

  • Break ground on a bustling SteamWorld town, inspired by the Old West.
  • Keep your steambots from getting cranky by ensuring their complex needs get met
  • Dig deep and spread wide to produce resources to aid your search for ancient technologies
  • Defend your mine from the creepy varmints that lurk deep below your town
  • Trade resources at the local train stop and welcome special visitors who’ll lend a hand
  • Five distinct maps littered with secrets for the discerning SteamWorld explorer to find
  • Four difficulty levels, including a sandbox difficulty for when you just want to Build!

No matter whether you are intent on building up your homestead. Or just want to manage. Or prefer to dig deep, SteamWorld Build should allow for it.

Devs speak

“We are delighted to see SteamWorld Build receive such love from media in their reviews of the game and we’re very excited PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch players can now experience the game for themselves,” said SteamWorld Universe and Franchise Director, Brjánn Sigurgeirsson. “We’re looking forward to being able to share more about the future plans for SteamWorld Build and the series as a whole!”

“We always placed a lot of pressure on ourselves when it came to meeting the high standards the series has set and making sure we get that all-important SteamWorld-feel right when it comes to SteamWorld Build,” said Adam Vassee, producer at The Station. “Seeing the reception that game has been getting is really humbling in terms of showing that we delivered on that and I’m so happy that players can have fun building now that the game is finally out!”

Play now

A price of £24.99 should be low enough to tempt you in to a purchase from the Xbox Store. If you have a Game Pass subscription, that temptation should grow.

There’s also a SteamWorld Build & Dig Bundle available too. Priced at £28.74, this combines SteamWorld Build with the original SteamWorld Dig. We’re not sure why Thunderful haven’t gone all in and chucked SteamWorld Dig 2 into the mix too, but it is what it is.

Expect to find everything you ned playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S (optimised). PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC folk should be equally well sorted. Get into the comments and let us know if you’ll be playing.

SteamWorld Build on Game Pass Description

HOMESTEAD One final landrush! The planet is dyin’, Astrid, and it’s dig or die trying! That mine under our town is sitting empty, and wouldn’t you know there’s rumours of ancient tech down there that might help us out of this predicament. Round up the posse, circle the wagons, and let’s get to building a new home! Collect resources above ground and ores down below so we can get those wealthy bots in here to help us build bigger, and we can get the heck out of here!

MANAGE As your borders expand, new steamfolk will find their way to you! Every bot is crotchety in their own way, and it’s up to you to keep them steaming along. Barter to boost efficiency, keep goods flowing to and from the mines and keep everyone happy to make them work their darndest and hardest.

DIG DEEP Stare into the abyss long enough and it might just stare back… we’re going looking for riches and something down there doesn’t want to share! Have gun, dig gravel, and make sure the mines don’t collapse upon you as you defend yourselves from the creepy crawlies that lurk within…
