Thought the legend was done and dusted? Think again as Modus Games and Secret Base throw an announcement of Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons to the world.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons will be roundhouse kicking its way to glory this summer as the cooperative beat ’em up launches on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC. If you want to get your money in early, a Steam Wishlist is your best bet.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons sees the return of Billy and Jimmy Lee, as well as a host of all-new playable brawlers, as tag team duos of fighters work their way through roguelite elements mixed with classic Double Dragon battling

Promising to bring a new edge to the franchise, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons whisks us off to New York City in the year 199X, just as the city has been devastated by nuclear war.  It’s here where we discover citizens fighting for their survival as riots, crime and chaos flood the streets. With criminal gangs seeking dominance, it’s up to Billy and Jimmy Lee to take it upon themselves to reclaim their city.

Expect to be found dropping into the shoes of Billy and Jimmy Lee, as they are joined by the likes of Marian, returning as a fully realized, firearm-wielding ranged fighter, and newcomer Uncle Matin, a riot-shield-wielding powerhouse. Whoever you go as, you’ll get the chance to tag in and out as the classic Lee duo or switch it up with different characters. Two-player local co-op will be included as the action quadruples as you and a friend clean up the mean streets.

Rise of the Dragons promises much, but the big draw may be the possibility of endless playthroughs. This is thanks to the game’s dynamic mission select function – the order in which you choose your mission will affect the mission length, number of enemies, and overall difficulty.  You’ll be able to pick between missions housed within city sectors, pursuing the leaders of four deadly gangs across unique stages packed with melee weapons, dangerously devoted members, and varied environments perfect for all-out fights. Expect to earn a bit of cash, drop some Special KOs, utilise Crown Control moves and unlock powerful upgrades for your characters as you fight your way through the next instalment of the Double Dragon series. Experimenting with the options should ensure tons of replayability.

With the usual series aesthetic to hand, pixel art visuals, updated appearances, adjustable difficulty settings and more, there’s a chance that Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons will be able to build on the series success – especially as post-launch online co-op play is scheduled for later in the year.

We’ll keep you looped, but for now, hit up the trailer.

I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
