There’s a rule written somewhere that you should watch whatever Guillermo Del Toro produces, because it’s going to be solid gold. Any doubts that wouldn’t translate to an animated kids series were punted somewhere into Pan’s Labyrinth, as Trollhunters has been a huge success for Dreamworks, Netflix and the many people who have watched all three Chapters (read: seasons) of it. Now comes the inevitable, and the game tie-in with Dreamworks Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia arriving on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC via Steam and PlayStation 4 today.
Rather than take a particular episode or series, Outright Games are using the puckish time-troll Porgon to have their cake and eat it. Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia uses Porgon to manipulate time to take you to some of the greatest moments in the series, and other series too, as it incorporates spin-offs Wizards and 3Below too. You’ll have to head off the Time-pocalypse to save humanity (and trolldom) once again.
The game takes the form of a 2D action-platformer, with you playing as Jim or Claire across multiple different environments. From the trailer, it looks like there will be plenty of hand-to-hand combat, platform-hopping, and boss battles against some of the series’ greatest, like Angor Rot and Gunmar. What really makes this interesting is the couch co-op: rather than play it straight with a traditional platformer, we’re getting the opportunity to fight alongside friends and family as Jim and Claire on one console. It’ll be fascinating to see how this plays out in a 2D adventure game.
Outright Games have some history in bringing kids’ favourites to life, having already given us the mixed-bag of Dragons: Dawn of New Riders, and the early-years focused Paw Patrol.
