2026's Best Games

It may be getting on for a decade old, and it may well be soon surpassed by a sequel, but today the spotlight is shining bright on Torchlight on Xbox thanks to the removal of its price tag and the chance for Xbox gamers to enjoy the RPG for free, all courtesy of the Xbox Games With Gold scheme.

It could be said that the Xbox Games With Gold scheme gets short shrift from many a gamer, but August 2019 sees the scheme deliver one of the most stellar months for free gaming yet. In and amongst the big hitters that have been confirmed like Gears of War 4 and Forza Motorsport 6, we see the charming action roleplayer that is Torchlight be stripped of the usual price tag and delivered to Xbox gamers for nothing.

A native Xbox 360 title that can be played on Xbox One thanks to the power of Backward Compatibility, Torchlight is now free until the middle of August, with Xbox Live Gold subscribers gifted the chance to download and play the game for nothing, all for as long as they hold a valid subscription.

Coming straight from the creators of the iconic Diablo, Torchlight will see you thrust into the action as one of three character classes, heading on out from the safety of the town into a world of randomly generated dungeons full of monstrous foes. From there, it’s all about lootin’ as you make your way through the darkness to discover endless secrets and huge surprises.

First released back in 2009, it is fitting that Torchlight is now free to download on Xbox thanks to the Xbox Games With Gold scheme, particularly as the sequel – Torchlight 2 – is due to release at the beginning of September. If you want to get ahead of the game and discover the wonders of this world then heading to the Xbox Store right now and grabbing your free download really is the way to go.

Game Description:

Torchlight is an action-roleplaying game developed by the creators of popular games Diablo and FATE. Players will choose from among three character classes, and venture from the safety of the town of Torchlight into randomly generated dungeon levels, with a huge variety of creepy monsters, endless variations of loot to find, and quests to complete. Randomized levels and an ‘endless dungeon’ unlocked after completing the main game ensure a long-lived gameplay experience.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.
