Game Pass brings you a Rocket League-beater today

Whisper it: there may be a game to usurp the mighty Rocket League on Game Pass today. Turbo Golf Racing (Cloud, PC and Series X|S) does for golf what Rocket League did for football, i.e. slap blazing-fast cars onto it, all to see what might happen. That’s not all, as we have a new addition to PC Game Pass in the form of Shenzhen I/O.

Turbo Golf Racing has been previewed by us, as it’s launching in Game Preview form. We’re just waiting for the masses to arrive in the lobbies, so that we can take a more honest look at it.

What can you expect from Turbo Golf Racing? Pandemonium, mostly. Imagine up to eight players, each in their choice of buggy, and each with their own giant, car-sized ball. Stick a giant hole at the end of a course covered with half-pipes, ramps and slides, and then fire the starting pistol. There’s not much nuance beyond that: it’s a chaotic free-for-all that has more entertainment than any LIV tournament can offer.

You have all the manoeuvres that you would hope for, as you can jump, flip, glide and – our favourite – fire weapons at each other. PGA golf would be vastly improved if Tiger Woods could fire homing missiles out of his golf bag.

The other game out on the service today couldn’t be more different. For one it’s a PC-only launch. Checking screenshots you can see why: this is an intricate game that could only be played with a mouse. Second, it’s a game about circuitry. Welcome to Shenzhen I/O.

But don’t sniff at it and get snarky: this is one of the few Overwhelmingly Positive games on Steam, and it has swallowed up more hours than a double-pack of Factorio and The Sims.

Get lost in a game where you can build circuits using a shoebox-full of components from different manufacturers, like microcontrollers, memory, logic gates, and LCD screens. Then you’re using a simple, proprietary assembly language to get it all to work.

Most other games would have stopped there, but we’re won over by the inclusion of a full manual with data sheets and reference cards; a forum full of NPCs to chat to about your constructions; and even a game of Solitaire if you need to pass the time.

Now, we’re fully aware that these two games won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Luckily, other games are on the way. For a start, Sunday saw the stealth-launch of Ghost Recon Wildlands onto Game Pass (Cloud, Console and PC), so hop into that if you missed it. Two Point Campus (Cloud, Console and PC) is out on August 9th; while Cooking Simulator (Cloud, Console and PC), Expeditions: Rome (PC) and Oddworld Trading Company (PC) are all due on August 11th.

Leaving the service on 15th August are the following: Boyfriend Dungeon, Curse of the Dead Gods, Library of Ruiner, Starmancer and Train Sim World 2. Go play them before they disappear from your subscription (possibly) forever.

Which of the world’s finest hobbies – golf or electronics – are you going to be dabbling in? Let us know in the comments or on our social channels.
