Way back in January of 2018, Sabotage Studios announced that they were working on The Messenger, a Ninja Gaiden inspired, Metroidvania-styled title planned for launch later that year on console and PC. And whilst that launch did indeed take place, at least on Switch and PC, it’s taken a little longer to reach Xbox One. The waiting ends though, now!

Available to purchase and download on Xbox One, after seeing launch on Nintendo Switch, PC and then PS4, The Messenger comes to Xbox One with much promise, letting players take in a classic action platformer that quickly morphs into something rather deeper.

Priced at £16.74 or also available on Xbox Game Pass, The Messenger immediately delights with a combination of 8-bit and 16-bit visuals, building on the classics from yesteryear, all whilst delivering a more modern day twist. With gameplay elements that will appeal to all ninjas – or even just their fans – a whole host of enemies and bosses to take down, and plenty of upgrades, abilities, secrets and more to hunt down and take in, there is on the face of it, much to love about this ninja romp.

Features include:

  • Dynamic, acrobatic gameplay and ultra tight controls worthy of an epic ninja adventure.
  • Character upgrades, new abilities, hidden levels, and branching paths to discover.
  • Meticulously designed 8-bit and 16-bit sprites, animations, and backgrounds in the spirit of the classics.
  • A memorable cast of offbeat villains, bosses, and associates.

Tempted? Sold by the critical acclaim The Messenger has gathered on Steam? Just in need of a new title and find the draw of anything hitting Xbox Game Pass unmissable? Get yourself over to the Xbox Store right now, grab a download of The Messenger and enjoy your journey through the way of a ninja. And if you aren’t quite sure whether this is one you should be playing, hold tight for our full review.

Game Description:

As a demon army besieges his village, a young ninja ventures through a cursed world, to deliver a scroll paramount to his clan’s survival. What begins as a classic action platformer soon unravels into an expansive time-traveling adventure full of thrills, surprises, and humor.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
