Sometimes, all you need in life is to be the hero; the one capable of holding off all foes and ensuring that your land stays safe. That’s the premise in Hillbilly Doomsday, the latest retro-inspired platformer to hit Xbox, PlayStation and Switch.

Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch, Hillbilly Doomsday will place you in the shoes of a hero, left to save the small village of Rottenwill from all danger – mostly zombie danger.

See, in Hillbilly Doomsday the planet has been overrun and it is up to you – Uncle Billy – to make your way through a variety of landscapes in hope of finding the source of the zombie outbreak. You’ll then need to put a stop to it. Pronto.

Priced at a mere £4.19 and available from the Xbox Store in two versions – native Xbox One or native Xbox Series X|S, with the latter coming complete with that all-important Xbox Series X|S optimised tag – Hillbilly Doomsday looks to be a fun little game, one that will have you going up against all manner of enemies, taking on big bosses and making the most of a wide variety of weaponry.

It’s helped that the worlds you traverse are full of loot too – the useful stuff, not just any old throwaway rubbish – so making progress should be something of appeal.

Also available on PlayStation and Switch as well as Xbox, should you be up for playing the hero and reckon a bit of retro-inspired shooter platforming is to your liking, Hillbilly Doomsday should be considered.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
