How long does an object need to be out in the wide world before it can be considered ‘retro’? I was recently privy to a conversation that dared to suggest the PlayStation 2 was now a retro console. I was having none of it. This latest release from Ratalaika Games, Cosmos Bit, available today on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, is a modern game with a retro twist. Harking back to the 8-bit platforming titles of the 1980s and ‘90s, can a new release be instantly retro?
In Cosmos Bit, you take control of heroic space warrior Stella Mironova. The platforms are plentiful and the worlds you explore bountiful. You will need to collect minerals in each level to build up your powers to help you explore otherwise inaccessible areas. I think that about covers the Metroidvania moniker.
Plenty of aliens stand in your way though. And if those weren’t enough, challenging bosses will pop up every now and then to cut you down to size. Though, Cosmos Bit states the game is challenging but not frustrating, offering something for gamers of all abilities.
Other features include:
- A tribute to the Metroidvania genre!
- Retrogaming pixel art style!
- High-level Synth Wave soundtrack by Jake D. Bind!
Cosmos Bit is available to download now from the Xbox Store priced at £4.99. There is a discount for early adopters too, dropping it down to £3.99. Stay tuned for our review heading your way soon.
