Spine is bringing gun
Updated Article – August 22nd 2024

There’s a new hard-hitting trailer for SPINE doing the rounds – and you can watch it below.

Released at the Future Games Show, this is an all-action, in-game cinematic parkouring boss fight video, debuting SPINE’s original score by producer and composer Le Castle Vania (John Wick, Payday). Featuring cinematic combat in a futuristic cyberpunk world, SPINE will define the gun fu game genre when it launches for PC and consoles in late 2025.

The trailer offers first looks at a spectacular parkour chase, new finishers, and boss fights against an enemy wearing a large combat exoskeleton and a ninja equipped with a spine of their own, deploying spider mines to dominate the battlefield. Movie fans may notice some homages to iconic action movies, including a close-quarters hallway fight and flock of white doves.

This new trailer also showcases the debut of the game’s original soundtrack by producer and composer Le Castle Vania, whose music features throughout the John Wick movie franchise. Stream the new single from SPINE now on Le Castle Vania’s Spotify, Soundcloud and YouTube.

“We believe a truly cinematic game should immerse players in its world and story through action, not just cutscenes, a huge focus in SPINE is on fluidity of movement and combat,” said Dmitry Pimenov, Producer of SPINE. “Today’s trailer featuring early gameplay is a glimpse at how we’ll deliver on that promise, with real-life stunt work from action movie specialists, a camera that puts players in the heat of the action, free-flowing combat and takedowns that let players orchestrate their own action scenes, and a hardcore soundtrack from artists like Le Castle Vania!”

Whether you’re chopping them up or chopping them down, SPINE will ensure that everybody is gun-fu fighting. Especially if you believe what is shown in the latest gameplay teaser trailer.

From the development team at Nekki is SPINE, a gun-fu fighter set to land punches and shots on PC and consoles in 2025. And when we say consoles, we mean Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

Redefining the genre

Promising to redefine the gun-fu genre, something that Sleeping Dogs did years ago, SPINE is a single-player, story-rich action game where the player takes on the role of rebellious street artist Redline. It’s here where you’ll find yourself accompanied by her sentient combat implant, Spine. Why? well, because you need to take on the challenge of the autocratic AI regime of Tensor Corporation, while learning to trust each other.

Shown off in the trailer below, SPINE features camerawork and combat choreography by action movie specialists. It’s helped that it is powered by Unreal Engine 5 and Nekki’s original animation engine, Cascadeur, making players the star of their own action movie where no two fights are the same.

“Today’s pre-Alpha Market Gun Fu teaser is just a taste of SPINE’s cinematic action from early in the game when Redline has unlocked only a small number of Spine’s abilities,” said Dmitry Pimenov, Producer of SPINE. “We’re looking forward to showing more gameplay later this year, as well as revealing more about SPINE’s deep story and world-building, character backgrounds, cutscenes and cinematic production. Players can follow SPINE on Discord where we’re regularly revealing new content, captured directly from the game.”

SPINE features include

  • Close-quarter Gun Combat: SPINE introduces a unique fusion of cinematic gunplay and close-combat beat ’em up, emphasized by elaborate camerawork and providing players with dynamic and immersive gun fu gameplay.
  • Cinematic Action: Collaborating with action movie specialists and paying homage to iconic action movies, Nekki promises a truly cinematic adventure where every moment feels like a scene from an epic blockbuster.
  • Gripping Narrative: Explore an immersive cyberpunk world as Redline and Spine challenge Tensor’s autocratic regime. Discover a story of rebellion, trust, and survival, while exploring the risks and benefits of AI.
  • Cutting-Edge Tech and Graphics: Powered by Unreal Engine 5 and Nekki’s proprietary animation engine, Cascadeur, SPINE boasts fluid, lifelike combat animations within a detailed cyberpunk environment, pushing the boundaries of gaming graphics.

Give that teaser of SPINE a watch and let us know your thoughts.

SPINE will be releasing on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC in 2025.
