The second and final DLC for OlliOlli World has now arrived, and this time, we’re heading up into the clouds!
The Radmospheric Three – Squid, Licht and Professor Planks – have heard of a plot by B.B. Hopper to find this rumoured city of Radlantis and profiteer from it. However, in order to find Radlantis, they need to first find the missing map pieces. It’s a good job then that these map pieces are hidden on new skate routes and levels, allowing you the chance to pick them up and find Radlantis for yourself, well before B.B. Hopper does.
Finding the Flowzone is the final piece of DLC for OlliOlli World. For those not in the know, OlliOlli World is a side-scrolling skateboard game in which you need to chain together tricks and get to the end of the course with the highest score possible. It has a huge amount of customisation, replayability and an incredible art style. It’s also a game that will definitely be up there come the end of the year as one of the best releases of 2022.
Finding the Flowzone is simply more of all the good things that OlliOlli World is known for, with a few new bits thrown in. There is a new skate god, the aptly named Gail Force, a new wind mechanic, new clothing, and music; all the good stuff, basically.
Finding the Flowzone takes place in the clouds above the main game and is accessible from the beginning. However, there is a caveat. Some of the gnarly – and new burly – routes will feature mechanics that are only unlocked later on in the game. These don’t prevent you from completing this DLC, but in order to unlock every single one of the thirty-six puzzle pieces, you will need everything at your disposal.
You only need eighteen pieces however to find the hidden city of Radlantis, and more than enough of these are accessible for skaters of all abilities.
These seventeen new levels heavily feature the new wind mechanic. Passing through these highlighted areas will give your skater a helpful speed boost. And, unlike the previous addition of OlliOlli World: VOID Riders’ anti-gravity zones, these don’t need to be activated by performing a trick; they just work from the off.
As usual, there is a tutorial level giving you an idea of how these wind zones work, and just how much of a speed boost they do give you. But, with the greatest of respect, ignore this. OlliOlli World players will already know how much mileage Roll7 can get out of their mechanics, and the wind zones are no different. They will start off giving you a nice speed boost, but it won’t be long before the direction of these zones changes. Then, they will be propelling you up, down and back on yourself. There is a directional arrow in the middle of these zones that will show you which way the wind is blowing. There should be no nasty surprises, but there is also no shame in having to restart levels.
As usual though, these new levels come with all the extras found in the main levels: Objectives to complete and highscores to beat. The Radmospheric Three provide the scores to beat in order to unlock some new gear, and with some good combos these can easily be knocked over. The challenges are a lot tougher though and will require some innovative lines in order to complete some of the really hard ones.
Those that also bested the VOID Riders DLC will be pleased to know that the final level in Finding the Flowzone is a lot easier. That final level performed in front of the Nebulord himself still gives me nightmares. The concluding stage here – the one that sees you winning the Radlantis Rivals Cup – is far less hellish.
OlliOlli World: Finding the Flowzone is a wonderful send off for one of the best games of 2022. The friendly interactions between the characters is always a joy and that, along with the art style, never fails to bring a smile to your face. And that’s before you get to the actual gameplay, which remains as tight and addictive throughout the main game and the DLC additions.
Finding the Flowzone isn’t as tricky as the VOID Riders DLC, but that’s alright. Instead it feels more like a happy send-off for OlliOlli World rather than being the next step difficulty-wise. OlliOlli World 2 when?
