Take a trip to Ancient Egypt as Assassins Creed: Origins arrives on Xbox One, PS4 and PC

1

After a little break from the series, Ubisoft is back with their awesome Assassins Creed franchise, this time whisking us off to visit the delights of Ancient Egypt during the Ptolemaic period, as we look to uncover the secret fictional history of real-world events.

The story explores the centuries-long feud between the Brotherhood of Assassins, who fight for peace by promoting liberty and The Order of the Ancients, the forerunners to the Templar Order, who desire peace through forceful order.

Assassins Creed: Origins is once more played from a third-person perspective, with a number of quests to complete throughout the vast open-world environment, all of which can be travelled on foot, horseback, camel-back or boat. With a ton of side quests and locations to explore, as well as revised mechanics throughout, Assassins Creed: Origins is set to bring the much-needed change to the series.

If you’re a fan of the previous games, or just like all things stealth, you’ll be keen to hear you can jump into the latest Assassins Creed adventure right now on either Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC via purchase through the respective stores.

There are three different versions available to purchase, with the Standard, Deluxe and Gold Edition’s all now available for the price of £54.99, £62.99 and £79.99 respectively. Full details of which are listed below. The Season Pass can be grabbed for a standalone £29.99 should you decide you want to go down that route a bit later, whilst a Deluxe Upgrade will set you back £7.99. There are also numerous Helix add-on packs should you feel the need to splash even more cash.

Gears of War 4 receives two final maps with October’s update

0

It may have been a year since Gears of War 4 landed, but that doesn’t mean things have calmed down over the past twelve months, and in typical fashion the guys over at The Coalition have yet another monthly update that is here once more to bring another dose of additional content to the popular third-person shooter. Two new maps as well as some exciting news on what’s left to come in 2017 have arrived.

The two maps arriving in Gears of War 4 are Fuel Depot and Lift Apex, both of which make up the final two maps of the scheduled thirty-four that were planned to release for Gears of War 4. For holders of the Gears of War 4 Season Pass, both of these can now be found in-game whilst the date for individual purchase and download is set for October 30th for those without the Season Pass. Each will be available for the usual price of £4.19

Fuel Depot, the first map will prove popular with fans and comes as a remake of the original found in the first Gears of War title. Fuel Depot is a large map that is best known for its flanking opportunities as well as the chance to catch enemies out in the vast open spaces that reside within it. There are two frag grenade spawns, as well as two Longshot Sniper Rifles, both of which are present within cargo containers, and the Hammer of Dawn. The warehouse will provide great opportunities for fans of the Gnasher to compete in close-quarters combat, with shutters also providing chance for fans of the Lancer to get in on the action.

The second and final map, Lift Apex is a renewed version of the original Gears of War 4 Lift map, and sends players back into the Imulsion Extraction Facility in the middle of the Serano Ocean. This version however does come without the expanding areas and moving lift, instead offering up the expanse of the submarine bay, along with all the enclosed defensive positions that are perfect for fans of the Gears of War 4 Horde mode. Timed shutters in the control room provide a way to either segregate players to bring the fight up close and personal, or give a much-needed escape from combat. The elevated area meanwhile will allow scoping opportunities. Lift Apex is sure to be a fantastic and fitting final addition to Gears of War 4.

Not only does the October update mark the end of the monthly maps, but it also spells the end for the popular Developer Playlists that provide the valuable Double XP and 20% bonus credits. That said it isn’t the end of everything as a new bonus is set to arrive in the near future that’s known as the ‘Map Owned’ bonus. This will give a permanent boost to all XP and Credit gains for any maps you individually or as part of the Gears of War 4 Season Pass, with bonuses applied for any match played on them in both Public, Versus or Horde game modes.

With Gears of War 4 already demanding a fair chunk of Xbox Storage, players will be pleased to hear that following optimisation upgrades, Gears of War 4 will now come with an optimised and therefore smaller game file size, freeing up space for other content, even after the October update is downloaded.

Whilst that may be it for the typical monthly updates, there is still plenty more to come from Gears of War 4 in 2017 and with Halloween just around the corner, you can expect to find the festive Halloween event incoming on October 27th, bringing with it the chance to collect some new characters and some new festive weapon skins.

Following on from the Halloween festivities is the month-long celebration of the 11th Anniversary of Gears of War coming on November 6th as well as the Thanksgibbing on November 20th and of course Decembers Gearsmas celebrations.

A noteworthy mention before we go is to remind you that Gears of War 4 is one of the many games set to receive a 4K update upon the release of the Xbox One X on November 7th.

So that’s everything from the Gears of War 4 October update, and with the final maps now arriving it’s time to look forward to the future events coming to Gears of War 4. Will you be diving in to the new maps? Let us know in the comments below or via our usual social channels.

First batch of Original Xbox Games arrive on Xbox One via Backwards Compatibility – Should you be playing them?

1

Xbox One Backwards Compatibility additions may have been quieter than usual in recent weeks, but now we are seeing interest boil up to an all-time high as Microsoft have brought the first wave of original Xbox titles to Xbox One via the Xbox One Backwards Compatibility program. With Original Xbox titles now available thanks to the sizeable list of new additions, here are our thoughts on which ones are most deserving of your time, along with the one’s we’d recommend you leave in the past – although should you be one that enjoys going back in time, this week’s arrivals hardly have anything you wouldn’t want to be playing.

Black – PLAY

EA may not be well associated with story driven single player adventures anymore, but that doesn’t mean it’s always been that way. Back in 2006 we saw the arrival of Black, a first-person shooter from developers Criterion Games and with EA behind them, it turned out to be a game that was quite simply an all-round fantastic experience and a real showcase for the FPS genre.

With a huge level of environmental destruction, and a fluid action packed story that put players in the shoes of Black Ops Soldier Sergeant First Class Jack Kellar, Black had it all.

Although the lack of the sequel that many of us wished for was certainly an opportunity missed by EA, the chance to jump back into this classic shooter is one that should certainly not be missed and with its arrival on Xbox One, there’s now another chance to play through one of EA’s finest titles once more.

BloodRayne 2 – PLAY

Action hack and slashers have been popular over the years with series such as Devil May Cry and BloodRayne bringing us the classic combat we’ve enjoyed for so long. With BloodRayne 2 now available on Xbox One, players once more have the chance to step back into the shoes of Rayne, this time many years after the original, with the story tasking players with hunting down the offspring of Kagan, Rayne’s vampiric father and her half-siblings.

BloodRayne 2 was an exceptional game that was well received by its players – this player in particular. With addictive gameplay, great cutscenes and a brilliant story, we should all be looking to get to grips with it again.

Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge – PLAY

Since the announcement that Original Xbox games would be coming to Xbox One, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge has been at the top of many players wish lists, and that is all thanks to its cult classic status.

Taking place in the Crimson Skies universe across an alternate history of the 1930s, increased sectionalism within the US has caused the country to split. Nation-states are now at war and has left pirate gangs to traverse the skies – leaving them ready to take any plane or Zeppelin not properly secured.

Crimson Skies: Hight Road to Revenge was one of the more unique titles to arrive on the Original Xbox, with praise for its high-quality graphics, airplane models, impressive explosions, large open environments and some brilliant audio and voice acting.

It may not have been one of the best-selling titles first time round, but there were certainly a lot who found plenty to praise and that means there’s every reason to go back and check it out again.

Dead to Rights – PLAY

Back in 2002 when the gun-fu (guns and lots of kung-fu) genre was highly popular, we saw many top titles coming onto our consoles. One of those was Dead to Rights.

Taking on the role of Police Officer Jack Slate, and his K-9 Unit, Shadow, Dead to Rights makes use of bullet-time. With Shadow sometimes accompanying Jack, players can command him to attack enemies, automatically taking down any enemy the player aims at before bringing back whatever they were carrying.

Dead to Rights may not have been the best game of its time, but it certainly provided a classic gaming experience. You should play it – even if it’s just for the over used bullet-time.

Fusion Frenzy – PLAY

Online multiplayer has now become the central focus for the gaming ecosystem, but the original days of Xbox painted a very different picture. Local multiplayer was the finest thing on the planet and sitting down with your friends to battle it out in your favourite games was seen as the pinnacle of gaming fun.

Cue Fusion Frenzy, a game that took note of the popularity of local multiplayer and sparked true competition in our lives, bringing with it a collection of 45 unique mini-games all bundled into one epic Xbox title, all of which were set in various well-designed 3-D urban environments and allowed us to challenge up three other competitors for the bragging rights.

Fusion Frenzy was a great hit amongst players. Should you be playing it again? Without a doubt you should.

Grabbed by the Ghoulies – LEAVE

Action adventure titles are one of the many genre’s that have been covered by the guys over at Rare throughout the years. One title in particular that has always stood out for me – after Conker’s Bad Fur Day and Viva Piñata of course – is Grabbed by the Ghoulies. However, that was only because the name was enough to make me giggle at the age of ten.

With repetitive gameplay seeing players do nothing much more than repeatedly bash enemies throughout the entire Ghoulhaven Hall, there was nothing to really keep players interested – at least not me – and that makes Grabbed by the Ghoulies quite the disappointment.

Of course, if you’ve enjoyed the Rare Replay Collection then there’s every chance you may want to add this one to your library just to get the true feel for some of the other titles from Rare, but I’d recommend you spend your time with some of the more deserving titles on this list.

Ninja Gaiden Black – PLAY

Dark Souls may be the most recent series to be renowned for its troublesome difficulty levels, but it hasn’t always been the talk of the town. You see, before it came the hack and slash action series Ninja Gaiden.

Ninja Gaiden Black is one of two remakes of the first game in the series, and follows the story of Ryu Hayabusa, a master ninja who is out to recover a stolen sword and avenge the horrid slaughter of his clan.

You’ll find yourself utilising many different magic spells – fireballs, ice storms, or bolts of lighting – as well as a vast array of sharpened weaponry as you attempt to fight flawlessly against the many enemies of Ninja Gaiden Black. The problem is that even the slightest hit from a foe will see huge chunks removed from your overall health bar.

But despite the rather crushing difficulty level, Ninja Gaiden Black was a big hit and one which spurned a number of successful sequels.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – PLAY

It’s not so often that we see a new game arrive offering third-person action-adventure puzzle-platforming, but back in the early 00’s, the gaming market was rife with such titles. One series that stood out amongst the rest was Prince of Persia.

With Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time now playable on Xbox One, players finally have the chance once more to follow the story of the unnamed Prince, after he obtains a precious artifact – the Dagger of Time. After being tricked in to releasing the magical Sands of Time, the city’s population is transformed into savage monsters, and the Prince along with the daughter of Maharaja’s daughter Fara, must act fast to correct his mistake and return the Sands to the hourglass.

Sands of Time comes with a heavy focus on platforming abilities, fighting, and the key rewind feature that can be utilized if and when the Prince makes a mistake. It’s a full-on classic and with a great story, addictive gameplay, and beautiful visuals (at least for its time), there is no reason not to head back into the unique tale once more.

Psychonauts – PLAY

It may have initially been seen as a commercial failure, but in the time since release, Psychonauts has become a beloved title in the community, gaining a bit of a cult following that has seen huge sales.

Taking control of Raz, a young boy gifted with psychic abilities who runs away from the circus in an attempt to sneak into a summer camp for those with similar powers and the hope of becoming a Psychonaut, there is possibly no other game that will let you become a spy with psychic abilities. Gameplay sees you exploring the strange and rather imaginative minds of the many characters found within as Raz helps them overcome their fears and memories.

It’s fair to say that with such a cult following, Psychonauts is one of the most popular of the new OG Xbox arrivals and is certainly worth heading back to if you are looking for a classic adventure.

Red Faction II – PLAY

It may not be the most popular game in the franchise, but Red Faction II was indeed another great entry in the series.

After an exciting start with the original title, Red Faction II provides another great storyline, this time placing you in the role of explosives expert – Alias.

Red Faction II sends players on a special operation to retrieve and claim the research data for the Republic of Commonwealth – the military state currently ruling the red planet. However, after a betrayal from their leader, Sopot, the player’s squad joins up with the mercenary resistance known as the Red Faction in order to fight back against Sopot and his Commonwealth regime.

If you’re looking to dive into a fantastic story, and head back on a nostalgic trip through a classic FPS adventure, Red Faction II is a game well deserving of your time.

Sid Meier’s Pirates! – PLAY

From the man who brought you those epic Civilization titles, comes a 2004 remake of an old ’80s game.

Sid Meier’s Pirates sees you playing as a swashbuckling pirate and not only can you sail the seven seas, look for treasure, engage in sword fights, ship battles and invade cities – but you can dance as well.

Playing like a load of mini games put together in one big shiny package, I had a blast playing Pirates back in the day. It felt a massive game at the time, and the wealth of things to do seemed amazing for the size of the console.

So stick your parrot on your shoulder, practice your foxtrot, polish your weapon and get back on board.

Other New Arrivals

Whilst we would love to be able to give an opinion on every game that arrives on Xbox One via backwards compatibility, there are some that arrive on the program that our reviewers haven’t spent enough time with to give a suitable opinion – or if they did the game was too unmemorable to warrant thought. These games do however deserve a mention…

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Star Wars: KOTOR was a game met with high praise from the community and it won countless awards including a BAFTA Games Award for the Xbox Game of the Year. Gameplay is based on the Wizards of the Coast’s Star Wars Roleplaying Game with combat being round based, with each seeing time being divided into rounds, allowing combatants to attack and react simultaneously.

Following an alignment system that tracks speech and actions from simple word choice to major plot decisions, something which then determines whether the player’s character aligns with the light or dark side of the Force, and with such high praise and a huge following, there are sure to be many who will be pleased at it’s arrival.

King of Fighters Neowave

2D fighters were plentiful in the original Xbox’s lifetime, but King of Fighters Neowave was one of those often praised graphically and mechanically. There is no storyline involved with King of Fighters Neowave but instead it uses a “Dream Match” which gathers characters from numerous King of Fighters games for players to compete with.

So, they have finally arrived and what a list we have, with the majority being well worth a look at once more – in fact only Grabbed by the Ghoulise is one we aren’t too bothered about –  there is plenty to choose from for those wanting to dive in to their nostalgic memories once more.

Ubisoft prepare for the launch of Assassin’s Creed Origins with a one-off gaming Sarcophagus

0

There is no debating that Ubisoft are going all out to provide the best Assassin’s Creed experience possible with Origins. But today they have unveiled something a bit special – a one of a kind machine-crafted Sarcophagus, complete with an Xbox One!

Inspired by the Egyptian pharaoh, Tutankhamun, the worlds first full sized replica Sarcophagus has been 3D printed and crafted from wood as the launch of Origins fast approaches. But not content with just doing that, Ubi have also dropped in a TV screen and Xbox One console in order to transform the unit into the perfect 21st century gaming cabinet, complete with an integrated holder to place the Xbox One controller on.

Using data-mapping imagery from Assassin’s Creed Origins, an image of the sarcophagus was generated by a team of 3D printing consultants at Hobs Studio, London, before the main body was then machined from wood, using Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technology.

The finer details of the 6ft sarcophagus were then created using a printing process called Stereolithography (SLA). The SLA technique uses a high-powered UV laser to “cure” liquid resin into a solid plastic, building the individual parts up layer by layer. Once complete, these parts were bonded with the main wooden body of the Sarcophagus figure. A dedicated artist was then commissioned to bring to life the detailed finesse of one of the most recognisable Ancient Egyptian relics, sitting alongside the ‘modern day’ hieroglyphics of Ubisoft, Xbox One and Assassin’s Creed Origins.

Bringing to life the iconic artefact, Ubisoft has aligned the old with the new, showcasing how this seminal antiquity could be made today. It also reflects the journey the development team haven taken in bringing the world of Ancient Egypt to life in the game, utilising the latest hardware technology.

Bryan Mulholland, Technical Consultant at Hobs Studio said: “This has been an extremely exciting project to be involved in. The process of bringing together a multitude of different technologies is no mean feat, but we worked closely with Ubisoft to ensure that every part of the process told a story and merged the old with the new to create something magnificent.”

Tom Goldberger, Senior PR Manager at Ubisoft UK said: “As a publisher at the heart of the latest technological advancements in the videogames industry, we really wanted to showcase another innovative technology, alongside one of the most powerful images associated with Ancient Egypt – our new in-game setting in Assassin’s Creed Origins. The final result is a stunning replica of a Sarcophagus, while adding a fun, gaming twist to the famous design.”

Assassin’s Creed Origins is set in Ancient Egypt at the time of Cleopatra, opening up a brand new vision where players level up, loot, and choose their abilities to customise their very own skilled Assassin, all as they discover the origins of the Assassin’s Creed itself. Origins also comes with a completely new combat system, allowing you to attack and defend multiple enemies at once, fighting against dangerous factions and wild beasts as the exploration of a gigantic and unpredictable land unfolds.

Assassin’s Creed Origins will hit Xbox One, PS4 and PC come October 27th, 2017. Those going down the Xbox One X route will find the game available at launch on November 7th, 2017.

de Blob to splatter paint on Xbox One and PS4 come mid-November

0

There’s a bit of a paint splattering addiction hitting the gaming world at the moment, but if you want proper splattering, then there is just one man/thing for the job – de Blob.

Coming to Xbox One and PS4 on 14th November 2017, de Blob will be arriving on console thanks to the folks over at THQ Nordic and Blitworks.

If you don’t know much about de Blob, then let me fill you in…

When colour became a crime and the evil I.N.K.T. Corporation removed the wonderful Chroma City of its beauty, things just had to be fixed. But in order to save the world from a completely black and white future, only one thing can restore the world back to life – de Blob.

Utilising unique abilities, de Blob will be flipping, bouncing and smashing past the I.N.K.T. Corp, launching a revolution and saving the city. You’ll need to help free friends, dodge ink cannons, outsmart soldiers and save the city by painting all the skyscrapers, bridges and landmarks that you can find.

With eight different multiplayer modes, a 4-player split screen option, and plenty of painting opportunities, we’ll hopefully be finding de Blob the go-to game for paint splattering madness.

Features include:

  • de Blob: Flip, bounce and smash your way past the all-powerful I.N.K.T. Corporation to launch a revolution and save Chroma City from a future without color
  • Long Live Color! Join the Color Revolutionaries in the resistance against Comrade Black and his diabolical array of hot plates, electric shocks, and ink turrets
  • Free The Citizens: Free your friends from a black and white world by painting the city back to life as you dodge ink cannons, flatten I.N.K.T. tanks and outsmart Inky soldiers
  • Multiplayer: Compete to control Chroma City in 4-player split screen in eight different multiplayer modes
  • Save your City: Paint Chroma City’s towering skyscrapers, expansive bridges and massive landmarks in your own style using custom colors, patterns and soundtracks

We’ll be sure to remind you when the game arrives, but for now you can get a little taste of the action by checking out the trailer below.

Assault Android Cactus to energise the Xbox One X launch come 7th November

0

If you occasionally game over on PS4 or PC, then you may well have heard of Assault Android Cactus. But in just a couple of weeks time, you’ll finally be able to play the twin stick shooter on a decent controller – that of Xbox One X.

Arriving alongside the launch of the console on 7th November 2017, Assault Android Cactus will come with native 4K 60fps at launch, as the action-packed arcade-style twin-stick shooter developed by Witch Beam, hits the Xbox One marketplace for $14.99 USD.

It will also include an optional developer commentary, whilst gamers will have the opportunity to try before they buy with a free 30-minute trial of the upcoming console version on both Xbox One and Xbox One X.

Assault Android Cactus will see you following Junior Constable Cactus and her friends across 25 action-packed levels as they regain control of the Genki Star space freighter from robot workers running amok. Expect lasers to fly as androids dodge bullets and attempt to send five bosses back to the scrap heap, all before their batteries drain away.

Every second counts in Assault Android Cactus as you will need to make your way through endless swarms of robots, grabbing power ups and batteries as you do so. It does however replace the traditional life system with a continuously draining battery – so should you stop fighting, will find that your survival is on the line.

Nine vibrant android heroines will each come with their own character-specific primary weapon with infinite ammo and a more powerful secondary weapon with a cooldown timer. The art is knowing exactly when to switch between the two, and that could well be the difference between victory and defeat on the ever-changing stages. Accessible gameplay makes Assault Android Cactus an intuitive title for one to four people to pick up and play.

There will be a variety of game modes too. Infinity Drive throws out wave after wave of mechanical minions, whilst you’ll be able to rumble with the big boys with the Boss Rush mode or drop by the Daily Drive to challenge a new scenario every day. Unlock EX options that open up a first-person perspective, powerful MEGA weapons, or an A.I. partner to bring along for the ride.

“The spirit of our game comes from a love of the arcade culture we grew up with,” says Santana Mishra, director, Witch Beam. “I’m excited Xbox One owners will get to experience Cactus’s non-stop action, and in glorious 4K HD on the Xbox One X.”

We’ll be sure to remind you when Assault Android Cactus is available on Xbox One and Xbox One X. For now – trailer anyone?

A hugely successful, highly addictive, majorly entertaining ‘thing’. Well, there’s good news, because if you’re one to shy away from the digital downloads, and prefer a physical disk, then Rocket League will soon be catering for you too.

“Warner Bros. has already proven to be a great partner,” said Jeremy Dunham, Vice President, Publishing at Psyonix. “We first collaborated on Batman v Superman DLC for Rocket League in early 2016 and we have continued to be impressed with the team’s knowledge, professionalism, reach and enthusiasm for video games. They are the ideal partner to help us push Rocket League to another level at retail.”

We will of course bring you confirmed details and a release date as and when we can – and if you want some Rocket League items

Take flight as AER – Memories of Old falls on to Xbox One, PS4 and PC

0

We first heard of AER way back in 2015 and even then it had been in development for a couple of years already. But now, nearly three years after that announcement, and a cool five years from its initial birth, the mystic 3rd person exploration adventure is a reality. A stunning looking reality.

Playing as Auk, a young girl who has the ability to transform into a bird at will, you’ll be able to check out the huge open world, discover plenty of shrines, hunt down spirit animals, and uncover the ruins of a lost ancient civilization.

With a hugely artistic low-poly art style, it has to be said that AER – Memories of Old certainly looks the part. And we just hope and pray that the gameplay holds up. With a ‘Best Indie Game’ at Gamescom 2017 nomination behind it, chances are it’ll be more than worth checking out.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm: Episode 2 Review

0

We’re back in Arcadia Bay for another episode of Life is Strange Before the Storm – a game that gives you an understanding of young love and teenage angst. Now there’s no point in reading this review if you haven’t played the first episode – so stop right now if you haven’t, because I might just head into spoiler territory.

Good, all the right people here? I will begin. So in the first episode we were introduced to Chloe and her rebellious ways. Haunted by dreams of her dead father who had a very unfortunate car accident, and living in a house with a horrible alpha male soon to be her stepfather, Chloe is having a rather rough time of it. She is failing at her school, getting in trouble with drug dealers and then, as she meets Rachel, her world turns upside down. Rachel is a good student, brilliant actress and someone who Chloe thinks is very cool indeed. A romance develops and they bunk off school together, only to discover that Rachel’s dad is having an affair with another woman. This prompts Rachel to start a terrible fire and that’s where we left our intrepid duo at the end of Episode 1. The chapter was brilliantly written, and had some nice interesting side missions, but it still had a major pacing problem.

Now with Episode 2 we start back with Chloe being called into school to deal with her absent day off with Rachel. There are some terrible consequences from their actions and Chloe has an emotional row with her mother and soon-to-be stepfather. Chloe is asked by her drug dealer to do a job for her that involves stealing something from one of the students. This goes badly wrong and you have some important decisions to make. There is a production of The Tempest that you are directly involved in, with some very emotional sweet moments. Then a dinner party where a home truth is revealed finishes the episode on a cliffhanger. But how does it all shape up?

I’d like to start by talking about the negative aspects first and getting it all out of the way before focusing on the positive stuff. My biggest problem with the Before the Storm is in the pacing and editing of the game. Yes, it’s great to have a flowing rhythm to the conversations and realistic close ups on faces for a long while, but that rhythm gets repeated too many times for my liking and starts to become stale. Also the tension in scenes can dissolve or get lost in certain situations, where it should be ramping up.

In the first episode, the game introduced a great system whereby Chloe used a sort of tug of war system of insults to persuade or influence a character to her whims. This is back, but it doesn’t feel as effective as first time out, and at times comes across as a bit redundant. It also had a couple of set pieces, like the roleplaying section, that gave the game a lightness and inventiveness to aid the main story. I feel now that those great set pieces are missing, apart from maybe within the Tempest play section. It just doesn’t feel the same.

But enough of the negatives, let’s drink on the positive, because there are lots of good things to be found in this well crafted game. The writing, which is the crux and heart of this series, is still excellent and brilliantly shaped throughout. The one liners, the character breakdowns and the weighty conversations are on the top of their game. Where else can you find a game that is a romantic drama about teenage life in small town America? The puzzles are nicely shaped as well, not too tricky, but there are some decent brain teasers in there as well. The well of detail in the things you can find along the way, that add sub stories and little side narratives is delightful. Then we have the excellent voice acting and amazing indie soundtrack that is expertly placed into key scenes and dramatic moments. The design and graphical quality of the episode is still of a very high standard too, with the colours pinging off the screen. Sometimes the facial expressions can die a little and look a tad bland, but in short the quality of Episode 2 of Life is Strange: Before the Storm is high.

In fact, the standard of this second episode feels like a traditional Act Two. It’s not quite as good as the first, and is hopefully sitting here just to bridge the gap that is leading to an exciting final third. The pacing will hopefully get better and I would like to see more innovative set pieces like those found in the first episode, and a bit less of the chat. But the quality of presentation, writing and voice over is as brilliant as ever and the point and click adventure is still very good.

I am now waiting with anticipation rather then dread for the next and final episode in this prequel saga. Please be brilliant.

Mixing pixel art, cartoon visuals and Metroidvania style gameplay – Nightmare Boy arrives on Xbox One, PS4 and PC

0

It promises some ’90s style visuals, a Metroidvania experience and plenty of action based platforming. Dare you take control of the Nightmare Boy?

Available right now on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, Nightmare Boy is the debut title from the Vanir Project, telling the story of Billy. After waking up from his very worst dream, he finds himself turned into the mysterious Rolok, before heading through a world that is filled with nightmare upon nightmare.

You’ll need to fight off enemies as you attempt to save other kids from their own nightmares, recovering Billy’s original appearance in the process, but with a huge world to explore, hidden secrets to find and tough bosses to fight, Nightmare Boy won’t be a walk in the park.

If you fancy taking in the dark story holding everything together, and are gaming on Xbox One, then you should be hitting up the Microsoft Store right now. PS4 and PC players should be able to find the game available on their own stores. £10.39 is the price, but should you be needing a bit of a push in order to really consider it, then it may well be worth holding off for our full review. It will be with you in the days ahead.

Features include:

  • Classic mechanics and playability that joins roaming, adventure and platforms.
  • Upgradeable character after defeating each final boss: double and triple jump, different magic attacks…
  • Graphic engine that mixes pixel art and cartoon characters, hand drawn, giving the game a 90’s arcade feeling.
  • Saving system based on collected jewels in the game. The more you save, the more expensive it gets.
  • Dark atmosphere, shady storyline; can you discover what lies beneath?

Game Description:

This story takes place in Donorok, in the state of Noctum. After the King of Noctum, Aster, disappears, chaos rules over the world. The relationships between Monsters, Mongos and Dreamers are completely unstable, and Donorok – the land so heavily affected by the chaos – slowly absorbs terrain from the surrounding regions.

Batman: The Enemy Within – Episode Two “The Pact” Review

0

It’s time to don the cape of the Dark Knight once again to protect the streets of Gotham as episode two of Batman: The Enemy Within, “The Pact”, arrives to try and kick more ass than the well-paced opener did. That’s no easy feat, but is it even possible to take things to another level, or has the series hit the proverbial ceiling already?

There’s no doubt Telltale did a top job in “The Enigma” by re-establishing Riddler as a credible villain, albeit with a slightly different take on him than we’re used to. But then, spoiler alert, he was shot dead by a mysterious assailant, after a sadistic riddle-based game was orchestrated to torture members of The Agency and put Batman in a tricky situation, testing his moral code. Just before the credits rolled however, Amanda Waller made it quite clear that she knows Bruce Wayne and Batman are one and the same – a real spine-tingling moment for Bruce and the player. So, what does this mean? She’s going to make him her pawn.

And it’s that specific moment where “The Pact” picks up, which almost immediately sees more chaos ensue in Gotham with an explosion at the GCPD weapons armoury. One thing leads to another and the Batman guise may not be ideal for figuring out what Riddler’s former crew have planned. Bruce on the other hand could give his old pal John Doe a call, to try and infiltrate the group, thus hoping to learn vital Intel for The Agency.

I’m not sure if Bruce really thought it through, because it soon becomes obvious that he’s going to have to get his hands dirty, alongside John and a friend of John’s… Harley Quinn. Arguably one of the hottest characters in terms of popularity right now in the mainstream, I think Telltale absolutely nailed it in keeping her quirky traits, whilst ensuring she’s not a carbon copy of other incarnation. And that goes for the other villainous members of their criminal gang, whom shall remain nameless – some things must be kept as a surprise and I was buzzing at the sight of them.

What’s utterly fascinating is the three-way dynamic between John, Harley and Bruce, especially given the fact that ‘John Doe’ is Joker in the making. At the moment, he’s such a vulnerable soul and is besotted by Harley Quinn – who takes charge in a really odd role-reversal between the two by bossing him about and generally striking fear into everyone who dares look her way. Every single scene Bruce is in with these two has you on edge and it’s exhilarating not knowing whether Harley’s about to smash someone’s head in, or if John’s playing you like a fiddle.

When the dialogue parts are as enthralling as the action, that usually means the latter is disappointing, however in “The Pact” they excel equally. Granted, the fighting isn’t as frequent, but my word it is greatly entertaining and carries on the utterly brutal trend we’ve seen in the previous episode. You’ll either love or hate the QTE format, but if you embrace it then it’s a real blast.

Unfortunately, it’s not all of a high standard in episode two, with various visual issues being rather distracting. First off, there appears to be some problems in the background of a couple of scenes, where it looks like static on an old video tape – a snowy effect if you will. Then there’s a moment in which a whole character and their weapon of choice is invisible, whilst the sound effects carry on as normal. Lastly are the laughable sections inside a car as it’s driving along; the way everything around the car moves is just strange and another vehicle was bobbing along like a ship sailing an ocean.

But hey, back to the positives, and the supporting cast really benefitted from an influx of new characters. Even though there wasn’t a load of time spent with anyone outside of the wacky threesome already mentioned, the small pockets of time there was with others gave a decent insight into the new personalities; all of whom are voiced well. On the old decision front I felt an improvement has been made and in fact I actually regretted a choice once it’d partially played out, which means I care and Telltale’s job is done – although a few more per episode would be welcomed.

Batman: The Enemy Within is flying high at the moment, with a cast of intriguing characters bearing their own identities which feel unique to the series, despite many of them having multiple incarnations in other forms of media. I laughed, was partially fearful of what Bruce has gotten himself into, and felt regular surges of adrenaline as I tried to be convincing as a potential member of the brilliant criminal ensemble in “The Pact”. From start to finish it is a real joy to play and I’m chomping at the bit for more!

Move over Batman, Bruce Wayne is the real star of the show.

God of Light: Remastered Review

1

Whether you love them or hate them, the mobile game is here to stay and just occasionally that means we’ll see the very best of them also arriving on console. With God of Light having racked up some major play time from over 15 million people on mobile, it seems like a bit of a no-brainer to see the game now released on Xbox One. But can the Remastered, most definitive edition of the light physics based puzzler shine on Xbox One, or is the switch from touchscreen to control pad going to see it fade into the dark night sky?

Well, it ain’t bad at all you know. But whether you should get involved or not all depends on whether you have played God of Light previously. Because if you have, then you’re just going to be left with the same old thing once more.

Playmous have delivered God of Light Remastered on Xbox One, but don’t let that ‘remaster’ tag kid you into believing there is more content on offer. In fact, it’s the exact same game as you can already pick up on mobile, just now it comes with brand new HD visuals, a soundtrack from UNKLE and the promise of tailored controls that will work beautifully on console.

Gameplay wise, and like I say, things are pretty much the same. You get to wake the game’s mascot, Shiny, from his slumber, before helping him ping his beam of light around multiple stages, lighting up the end of stage Source of Light which is found in each one, and collecting stars and crystals as you do so. But the problem is Shiny very rarely moves, instead being limited to spinning round on his axis and projecting his light out to all manner of mirrors, prisms, splitters, filters, black holes, lenses and more. Each of those in turn will offer a unique ability, with them twisting and turning, running up and down on rails or teleporting to new spots in the level in order to help Shiny out. On the face of it, it’s all fairly simple stuff, and the new game mechanics including multiple colours of light are dropped into proceedings in a well timed manner, never leaving you to worry about how to get working with each element.

But with cleverly designed levels that get progressively harder, it won’t take long before you find yourself needing to delve into the darkest depths of your grey matter in order to work out the solution to each one. Manage to light up that Source of Light – either by hook or by crook – and your job is a good ‘un and you’ll quickly be whisked away to the next stage.

150 levels are place, and these are split across different ‘trees’ with the end level in each seeing that tree eventually sparkle into life once more. Whilst the first 25 stages are doable, everything else is locked down and will require the collection of stars as you go about lighting up each source. With three hidden away on each stage, it’ll be up to you to ensure that your beam passes through each one before hitting that end of level completion. There are however plenty of obstacles that you’ll need to force your beam of light through, and whether it be solid rock that needs to be burnt through by using an extra powerful lens fuelled beam, gates that can be opened by hitting a switch, or anything else that the developers at Playmous have come up with, you’ll need to work out the best solution for each. You see, without hitting these stars, much of your time with God of Light Remastered will be confined to the very earliest of stages.

Thankfully, to help you out, and to allow for a bit of an easier time in the progression stakes, Fireflies have been introduced to light up the way and show you the optimum pattern for success. These are severely limited, both in time and number, and you’ll need to hunt each one down from each level in order to utilise them. The ‘hunting’ consists of simply shining your light upon them, which in turn banks them for those times of need. They are a clever and much needed way of allowing those who are struggling with a stage, the opportunity to gather up all stars and make their way through each section. But you’ll need to use them wisely as once you’ve called upon their glow, and been shown their prime level completion way, they will be gone forever. And sods law states that once you’ve utilised their goodies, will be crying out for them again in no time.

So God of Light is a fairly simple idea that has been executed well. The visuals are, as you would expect, hugely colourful, well defined affairs, and throughout your time with God of Light will see your screen glowing bright. However, with the many mobile games that make an appearance on console, there is the same old worry about whether the control scheme can keep up with the idea. And it is within this which sees God of Light slightly struggle.

You see, running your control between each of the adjustable puzzle pieces that you can mess around with is sometimes frustrating, with a push on the thumbstick more often than not seeing the wrong piece selected. This is fine in the early stages as you are free to take your time and plan your routes with little in the way of worry, but later levels call upon precise swift movement, occasionally as a timed gate is left open and you rush to get your beam of light shining through it. Unfortunately, the control issues don’t really allow for smooth progression. It is puzzles like this which excel when they let the player take their time with every last adjustment, and so even though the introduction of these fast paced movement opportunities may well work fine with a touch screen, when you’re frantically trying to move a cursor from one piece to the next as fast as possible, frustration occurs.

There is also a bit of a wait before the rotation of any piece seems to kick in, and at times of need, that delay is unwelcome. Additionally, and even though you can use your triggers to fine tune any movement, the entire control scheme is just a bit ‘off’, either moving too quickly, or too slowly for my personal liking. It’s never enough to really kill the game, but you will be left cursing as you attempt to fix the same puzzle pieces in place time and time again, especially whilst those damn timed gates slam shut in your face or the introduction of black holes see your beams twisted and contorted with every slight move.

Furthermore, and whilst I both like and understand the idea of collecting stars to open up further levels, many will find this a chore, and going back through each stage to gather up the leftovers isn’t something that is particularly appealing. But in order to open up each segment of God of Light Remastered, going back through them is a must as the star collection requirements are a little on the high side, especially should you wish to make it through to the very latter stages. Hey, I guess that is what YouTube walkthroughs are for though?

Should you be able to keep yourself away from the video cheating, then God of Light Remastered is however a delightful little puzzler that will keep those who enjoy a bit of a brain taxing time busy for a good while. Don’t expect to find yourself breezing through each level, and you’ll most definitely need to go back over previously completed ones in order to hunt down all the stars or Fireflies, but that in turn ensures that God of Light delivers plenty of replayability.

At the end of the day, God of Light isn’t a bad little addition to the console scene, but it is a game you can play for free on your mobile, so the £8 odd asking price seems a bit high. You’re going to have to already be wrapped up in the puzzle genre in order to enjoy it fully, and I can see many turning away from it just because of the tough ask in opening up all the different trees and sources of light, but if that is something you enjoy, then there is plenty of opportunity for going back over things with the star and fireflies collectibles.

Mobile games on console ain’t all bad you know, and if you want a puzzler, God of Light Remastered will suffice.
