Blackwind header

If you hadn’t quite got your alien fix from the likes of Aliens: Fireteam Elite or Rainbow Six Extraction, then Blackwind is more than happy to fill that alien-shaped hole in your heart. However, instead of using boring old guns to dispose of the evil threat, this time around you have a whole mech to play with!

Now available on Xbox, PlayStation, PC and Switch consoles, Blackwind tasks you, as James Hawkins in his bespoke Battle Frame prototype, to venture across the planet of Medusa-42 in search of any alien scum – known as the Raknos –  to dispose of. For James, this isn’t just a task for the betterment of the planet, but he must also rescue his missing father.

Sound good? Our full review of Blackwind on Xbox Series X|S is here to let you know how it plays out.

In a gameplay sense this translates to some blood-pumping hack-and-slash combat, or some more long-range firing using missiles, if that suits your playstyle more. What with the incredibly high-tech Battle Frame, it really is up to you how you go about taking down the dozens of aliens coming your way. The choices only get larger when you are working your way through the skill tree in place, as you upgrade your Battle Frame with brand new powers. Finally, the Battle Frame is equipped with a Drone that serves as both a combat tool, and an exploratory one. If you want to share this journey with a sofa-based friend, then one player can control the Battle Frame, with the other taking up an accompanying role in control of the Drone.

Features of Blackwind include:

  • Choose your playstyle: Engage in melee combat, shoot at will, launch missiles at enemies, or use special Battle Suit powers to survive showdowns.
  • Fiercely terminate your opponents with brutal moves.
  • Evolve your Battle Frame with new powers and expand your skill tree.
  • Use the Battle Frame Drone to expand your fighting and exploring capabilities in the single-player campaign.
  • Local Coop Mode: the Battle Frame and its Drone can be controlled by two players.

Blackwind can now be purchased from the Xbox Store for £19.99 if you are playing on Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. Alternatively, you can pick up a copy for PS5, PS4, PC or Nintendo Switch.

What are you waiting for? Get out there and kill some aliens!
