In a gaming scene arguably heavily saturated by uber in-depth Triple-A titles à la Final Fantasy remasters and The Witcher series, it can prove difficult for new strategic titles to shine through, especially on the console platforms. However, SolSeraph is attempting to do just this, playing out as a half top-down strategy, half side-scroller fantasy action game. But with SEGA backing SolSeraph as a publisher, it’s clear to see that it has got all the assets needed to be the next big thing in the genre, especially as it launches on Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC, SolSeraph tells a tale of Gods, chaos and a world being seized by the suffocating grip of evil. It is up to you, as Helios, the godly possessor of powerful divine abilities, to restore peace and stability to the ravaged and desolate world.

The main way you will go about this is by organising the defensive make-up of a number of tribes. For this, you can expect to be setting up a variety of barracks, soldier units and other defences in order to protect each settlement from a range of evil monsters, before wielding your own magical weapons, from swords to shields to bows, and getting your own hands dirty via side-scrolling fighting. By disposing of enemies on your own, Helios will develop even more abilities that you can utilise during further battles. In order to succeed in SolSeraph, you will have to balance your responsibilities in defense, offense and ultimately growing a number of settlements with farms, facilities and the like.

As well as SEGA backing it up, SolSeraph also has a big name in the audio department – the legendary Yuzo Koshiro has comprised the opening soundtrack to the game – and in terms of the narrative, esteemed writer of The Talos Principle, Jonas Kyratzes, is contributing to the story of SolSeraph.

With a rich wealth of options when building up your settlements, and a generous helping of exhilarating, fast-paced battling, SolSeraph certainly seems like one to purchase if you are a fan of such games of this ilk. The game is currently available on Xbox One from the Xbox Store for £11.99, and you can also pick it up on PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch.

I'm an avid gamer who will play pretty much anything... but stick an open world or adventure game in front of me and I'm more than happy.
