Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, sequel to Fallen Order, gets a release date

The Game Awards has delivered an absolute avalanche of game news, and one of the most significant has been the release date for Star Wars: Jedi Survivor. If you’re a fan of Cal Kestis and wafting lightsabers, then you might want to book March 17th, 2023 off. It’s available solely on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, mind you.

Respawn Entertainment didn’t only take the opportunity to drop a date in your diaries. They also showcased some gameplay footage, which pulled back the curtain on a more experienced Cal, who has since become a Jedi Knight. He’s capable of using dual lightsabers, new combat stances, new force abilities and something called a Crossguard stance, which allows you to take a more measured approach to slicing up stormtroopers. It’s not as if they can hit you anyway.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor follows Cal’s story five years after the events of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Cal is continuing to develop as a Jedi, which is pretty hard when you’ve got the Empire on your tail. You can be reassured that series favourite BD-1 is still by his side, while he will welcome new and old allies on the journey. This includes Bode Akuna (Noshir Dalal) and former crew member Cere Junda (Debra Wilson).

Cal has been doing some odd training on the path to becoming a Jedi Knight. Rather than tumbling around with Yoda on his back, he’s been learning new traversal options such as an ascension cable to reach new heights, and the ability to tame and ride creatures. Take that Luke: that’s a much better character sheet.

We’re hoping that Star Wars: Jedi Survivor continues to do what it’s best at: creating immersive and explorable locations from across the Star Wars universe, and let you at it at your own speed. It certainly seems that way, as Respawn are keen to mention that it has the “deepest exploration and cinematic gameplay in the series”. Lovely jubbly.

“Star Wars Jedi: Survivor evolves the gameplay, story, and exploration from Fallen Order in every way,” said Stig Asmussen, game director, Respawn. “Responsive and powerful combat makes players feel like a true Jedi Knight, with new lightsaber skills and Force abilities that add additional layers of strategy to each enemy encounter, and worlds that are filled with environmental challenges that must be overcome to unveil the mysteries within.”

If you’re interested enough to pre-order, you will receive exclusive cosmetic items to outfit Cal with a Obi-Wan Kenobi-inspired “Jedi Survival” Cosmetic Pack. Players can also pre-order the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Deluxe Edition which unlocks exclusive cosmetic items inspired by Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and R2-D2.

All that’s left is to remind you of the deets: Star Wars: Jedi Survivor is out on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on March 17th. Not quite May 4th (May the Fourth be with you, etc), but we’ll give Respawn a pass this time.
