RedDeerGames are fast making a name for themselves as the publishers of some quirky little titles. After previously dropping the delightful Under Leaves and Little Mouse’s Encyclopedia to console, it is they who are now behind the upcoming launch of Boreal Tenebrae, a retro-styled adventure that looks to mix Stranger Things with Twin Peaks. If you’re looking for weird, this is probably it.
A retro adventure title that is pushed along by horror elements, Boreal Tenebrae will launch on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch later in 2021. It’s a game that has been created by Daniel Beaulieu and Snot Bubbles Productions, with RedDeerGames helping push it out to market. It’s also a title that has been nominated for numerous awards too, including Best Art Direction and Best Narrative at the Canadian Game Awards 2021.
But what is Boreal Tenebrae? Will, basically it drops you into the dream of a dying town as you then work your way through an incredible retro-styled adventure that has been inspired by PlayStation 1 classics. It comes with more than a hint of a mysterious atmosphere and horror elements as you play through this world in the shoes of a young teenage girl, Bree, as she goes in search of her sister.
The problem is, this town is diseased; everything is a bit strange and unusual. And it’s the townfolk here who have been hit by this disease. It’ll be up to you to try and understand what the hell is going on in this weird world. Yet you won’t just be stuck following Bree throughout, taking on roles as further multiple characters as you go.
The key features of Boreal Tenebrae will include:
- SEARCH FOR SARAH – Play as a teenage girl named Bree and search for your missing sister Sarah. She began the ritual but was consumed by it and vanished. Investigate the disappearance of your sister and complete the mystical rite to save the dying town.
- EXPLORE THE DYING TOWN – Explore a diseased town where everything is unusual. Strange boxes that emit hypnotic static appeared in town. Some citizens, including Sarah, have been absorbed by this mysterious object and never come back.
- ATMOSPHERIC ADVENTURE – Experience an atmospheric adventure with horror elements, during which you play as multiple characters, each with their own story, and travel to actual locations in town and dark versions of them.
- SOLVE THE MYSTERY – In this nightmare, you have to solve the murder, search for your missing sister Sarah, and complete the mysterious ritual to save the dying town. Will you be able to unravel all the dark secrets of Boreal Tenebrae?
With a fixed camera system, story-driven quests and plenty of horror, gore and inspiration from the classics, Boreal Tenebrae should certainly be one to keep an eye out for when it drops onto Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch soon. We’ll be sure to remind you when that time comes.
