Super Bomberman R rocked up onto the scene back in 2018, followed by Super Bomberman R Online a few years later. But it was 2022’s announcement of Super Bomberman R 2 that really got the juices flowing. Now we have a fully confirmed release date for that sequel.
Konami’s bomb-bastic party affair, Super Bomberman R 2 will be hitting Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC (through Steam) come September 13th in digital fashion, with a physical launch happening a day later on the 14th.
Giving players the opportunity take in single player gameplay modes, as well as new online Battle options with a 64-player Battle Royale at the heart, Super Bomberman R 2 should well be a decent step up from what came previously. And do we really need to tell you how this one will work? It’s Bomberman, you’ve probably played it in one guise or another over the years.
The key features and Battle Modes you should expect though will run the lines of…
- Castle: Fight in 1 vs 15 asymmetrical matches online in this new attack vs. defend battle mode! A defending player is tasked with creating a map and placing defensive traps to slow down the offense. Different terrain options, wall placements, defensive gimmicks and the help of new character types called “Ellons” are at the defending player’s disposal. The attacking side must blow through the defender’s gimmicks to reach all the treasure chests and win!
- Battle 64: Be the last player standing in this battle royal classic. This chaotic mode features 64 players, but only one can come out victorious.
- Grand Prix: Compete for crystals and knock out other players. Team battles are a blast in this game mode.
- Standard: The beloved classic battle mode from SUPER BOMBERMAN R 1 and SUPER BOMBERMAN ONLINE returns.
There’s a story if you are all that bothered; although we’re more interested in working through the maze-like levels and bombing the hell out of anyone who gets close. If you do prefer to run narrative lines, it’ll tell the story of how the Black Moon starship ravages across the galaxy destroying the cities on the planets it visits. As the threat looms across the universe once again, it’ll be up to the 8 Bomber Brothers and their new friends, the Ellons, to save the universe and keep the peace.
Like we say, throw bombs, enjoy the explosions they make. Rinse. Repeat.
Super Bomberman R 2 will also come complete with a Stage Editor, allowing you to craft and create your own levels before sharing them with the world. That in turn should mean the sheer number of stages found in SBR2 will be limitless.
