You may have thought Atari were only concerned with Recharging their older titles like Centipede and Breakout, bringing them in line with modern day gaming audiences. But you’d be wrong and every now and then an original game pops up. Having been created back in 2021 as an Atari 2600 title, Mr. Run and Jump is now also set to launch on PC and console.

Mr. Run and Jump promises to deliver a mad dash through a neon oasis, as players take in an eye-melting 2D platformer, testing their gaming skills in multiple ways.

An action platformer, Mr. Run and Jump will whisk you off to a neon-infused world in which only the quickest reflexes and most skilled of manoeuvring will bring success. See, as you take on the titular Mr. Run and Jump, you’ll need to navigate your way through the hazards of the Realms of Color, defeating foes and rescuing your little dog, Leap.

Precise controls, smooth gameplay and free-flowing levels look set to be the key to how Mr. Run and Jump works, ensuring this one could well be suited to not just the general gaming public, but that weird world of the speedrunner too. With collectibles to find, difficulty levels to adjust and peril at every turn, this should be an Atari title not to miss.

Mr. Run and Jump was originally created in 2021 as an Atari 2600 game, designed by John Mikula, a developer at St. Louis-based indie studio Graphite Lab. Its precise platforming showcases the legacy 2600 hardware, proving that it is still capable of engaging hobbyists and fans 40+ years after its release. It’s here in which the teams at Atari and Graphite Lab were so enamored that they teamed up to create a modern version of Mr. Run and Jump, highlighting the best of the 2600 title for modern consoles and PCs, and layering in a beautiful landscape of color and sound.

“We are thrilled to introduce Mr. Run and Jump to gamers worldwide,” said Matt Raithel, Graphite Lab Owner and Studio Director. “Dazzling animation, intense platforming, and approachable characters all come together in a package that was made better with the help and support of the team at Atari.”

Key features will include:

  • Dozens of unique levels within six distinct, vibrant, and beautifully illustrated worlds
  • A variety of devious enemies, each with their own attack patterns and personalities
  • 30+ hours of gameplay including Time Trials, hard-to-reach collectibles, achievements, and more
  • Precise controls make Mr. Run and Jump’s platforming as smooth as butter
  • An original story of a transformed world, a devouring Void, and all the wonders of the Realms of Color

Expect to find Atari pushing Mr. Run and Jump to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PC (Steam, Epic) and Atari VCS later this summer. Give the trailer a watch if you’re in the market for some popping visuals.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
