gryphon knight epic definitive edition xbox

Remember how Gryphon Knight Epic delivered a wonderful 2D Medieval shoot em up experience back in 2016, dropping players into the life of one Sir Oliver before tasking them with taking down all manner of foes in a quest that focused on the saving of his friends? Well, good news, because Gryphon Knight Epic is back, just this time in Definitive Edition form on Xbox One.

Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One, Gryphon Knight Epic: Definitive Edition takes the original game from those years back, before dropping in a host of Definitive Edition content. Normally in gaming circles that means we see the arrival of a new stage or two, a couple of new enemies and an additional little feature. And yep, that’s the case here.

The Definitive Edition of Gryphon Knight Epic on Xbox One delivers no less than 9 hand-crafted levels, with a brand new stage that is now in place. This comes with a new Boss (naturally), a new sub-Boss (naturally x 2), an additional rune, weapon and a few tasty achievements. And if there’s anything we know about Xbox gamers, they love an easy cheevo or ten.

The proper big change here though is the inclusion of a Local cooperative mode that can see sofa based friends jump in and jump out at will. Yep, finding the task set by Sir Oliver too much and you can now call on a friend to lend a helping hand.

Full features of Gryphon Knight Epic: Definitive Edition include:

  • – Fight your way through 9 hand-crafted levels.
  • – Duel with challenging bosses and get their weapons.
  • – Explore the stages to find equipment for your character and bits of ancient lore of the world.
  • – Enjoy challenging gameplay and pixel art graphics, just like old times.
  • – Definitive Edition: One new stage with a brand new Boss, sub-boss, rune, weapon and achievements!
  • – Definitive Edition: Jump-in/Jump-out Local Co-op, a friend can join anytime to help on your quest!

So, if you haven’t previously played Gryphon Knight Epic then the Definitive Edition is as good a place to start as any. It will set you back ÂŁ10.74, and compared to the standard edition which is rolling around the Xbox Store for ÂŁ7.99, that’s not a bad price to pay. If you’re a veteran of the scene, then whether there is enough here to warrant another look, we’re unsure, but should we drop a little review of the Definitive Edition, all will be detailed in there.

Let us know what you think though. The comments are down below. Will you be helping Sir Oliver on his quest again?

Game Description:

Gryphon Knight Epic is a 2D Medieval Shoot’em up that mixes elements from classical shoot’em ups, exploration and duel-like boss battles, it tells the story of Sir Oliver and Aquila, an accomplished knight and his loyal gryphon that are forced back to adventure once again Sir Oliver has already defeated a dragon, married a princess and saved the kingdom. But during his quest he will face adversaries he never imagined he would, because… in reality all of them were once friends. What happened? These heroes would never go rogue… and all at once? Something is rotten in the kingdom and it’s up to Oliver to discover what.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
