For what seems like an eternity, the Serious Sam Collection has been promised, retracted and then promised again for the modern console generation. Well, now that we’ve actually progressed to the Series X|S, Serious Sam Collection has shown its head above the parapet. It’s here, and it’s absolutely ready to play. You’re getting a heck of a lot of game here for your moolah. Deep breath: there’s Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter, Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, Serious Sam 3: BFE and The Legend of the Beast and Jewel of the Nile expansions. Within those games, you have four-player local co-op, a standalone survival mode, and classic multiplayer match-ups including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and more.
We’ll be honest, we’ve seen a lot of Serious Sam but not played too much, and this seems like the chance to play it from front to back. It’s about amping up your firepower, gifting you shotguns, heavy lasers, cannons and miniguns, and then amping up the number of enemies too, as you cull alien invasions with your walking armoury. There’s no subtlety here, just alien innards.
Having survived at least three separate adventures, poor Sam has seen the world. You’ll be taking in the ruins of Ancient Egypt, as well as the arenas of South America, among others. Aliens don’t just land in North America, you know – don’t let the movies kid you.
