Get Lost in Random with Zoink and EA’s gothic fairytale

-

With Fe and Flipping Death behind them, there’s something gorgeously mysterious and intriguing about what Zoink Games are able to produce. Throw in the might of EA for good measure and it should be a match made in heaven. Or in the case of Lost in Random, an odd gothic fairytale mash-up.

Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC through Origin and Steam, Lost in Random is the latest to come out of the creative house of Zoink. It’s a tale which will throw players into a dark and twisted world in which every event and decision is driven by the roll of the dice.

A single player adventure through an ever-changing landscape, Lost in Random introduces us to two young sisters – Even and Odd – as they find themselves at the mercy of the evil Queen and her dark dice. It focuses on how, when separated from Odd on her twelfth birthday, Even enlists the help of Dicey, her dice companion, to traverse through the land’s six realms and rescue her sister from the Queen’s grips.

It’s up to you to help Dicey and Even as they face off against the Queen’s minions in explosive dice battles, leading into giant board game arenas in which gameplay strategy will need to be switched on the fly, all as you take in an exciting blend of real-time action and time-stop tactics.

There are also cards to collect, letting you build a formidable deck of combat abilities, whilst the opportunity to meet unique characters should never be ignored – if only as they will challenge you in ways you never expected.

“We were fascinated with the idea of exploring the feeling of uncertainty as the starting point for Lost in Random, instead of focusing on predetermined game mechanics,” said Olov Redmalm, Game Director and Lead Writer at Zoink Games. “The overarching theme of randomness helped us be creative with every aspect of the game, as each element fit into the dreamlike world in its own way that enhances the player journey. Combining sharp dialogue with mystery and emotional storytelling elements in a new way, we are excited for players to finally face the fear of randomness in Lost in Random, and see how that experience changes their outlook on life — all portrayed through the daring character of Even.”

Lost in Random should well excel in the dialogue stakes too, what with it being penned by Ryan North, author of Adventure Time, Marvel Comics’ The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and more. It’s this which should immerse players in the macabre mood with each new twist and turn they encounter. With an art style inspired by the likes of Tim Burton, Shaun Tan and Alice in Wonderland, the game’s beautiful and highly visual environments bring the Kingdom of Random to life in epic ways.

Key game features include:

  • UNCOVER A TWISTED FAIRYTALE – Penned by Eisner Award-winning Adventure Time and Marvel Comics The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl author, Ryan North, step into a beautiful and haunted wonderland where you must venture through the six twisted realms of Random, each with its own maddening set of rules. Help its unpredictable inhabitants, save your sister, and discover a twisted tale with a very modern message.
  • ROLL WITH IT, IN EPIC TACTICAL DICE BATTLES – Face the unknown in a unique blend of tactical combat and card collection, adapt your battle strategy on the fly within evolving board game arenas.
  • DEFY YOUR FATE AGAINST ALL ODDS – Defy a cursed fate and harness the power of randomness. Team up with your friend Dicey to play the odds, where the course of battle can be changed with the throw of a dice.

You can grab Lost in Random from your favourite digital store right now. It’s £24.99 from the Xbox Store, with Smart Delivery ensuring you play the finest version for your system. Expect 10% off if you’ve an EA Play subscription too.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
