Intriguing enough to warrant a spot on our monthly Up Next for March 2021 article, Mundaun has been readying itself for this moment; the moment that it welcomes players in to the Alps before seeing them descend through the horrors found within.

Available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S (both of those through the Xbox Store), PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store, Mundaun is a folklore inspired horror title from the one-man indie studio at Hidden Fields – programmer and illustrator Michel Ziegler. A guy who grew up in the area with which the horrors are now found, Ziegler’s creation will now play on the fears of many as they take on the part of a young adventurer who has headed off to the Alps in the hope of uncovering the mystery of his grandfather’s death.

“It is surreal to finally be able to share Mundaun with players across the world. It has certainly been an emotional roller coaster working on the project for so many years,” said Hidden Fields founder and developer Michel Ziegler. “The Alps hold a special place in my heart, and I wanted to create an experience that embodies my summer trips as a child, while paying homage to the brilliant but dark folklore of the region. I am so thankful for the support of the team at MWMi who helped bring my vision to life, and I hope everyone enjoys playing Mundaun as much as I enjoyed making it.”

Mundaun has been worked on since 2014, but only now will gamers get the chance to uncover the secrets that it holds. If you’re up for joining this adventure you should be aware of two things – you’re going to be tested with more intricate puzzles than you ever imagined, and that the Alps are no place for the faint of heart. This is going to be one hell of a journey you put yourself through, but only by uncovering the darkest of secrets will you ever discover what exactly is going on in the hidden depths of Mundaun.

Priced at £16.74, Mundaun is certainly a tempting proposition and we’ll be sure to detail all the finer bits in our full review of the game on Xbox. If you’re sold on the premise though, or just find that you just have to take a trip to the Alps, get heading towards your favoured digital store and grab the download. You’ll find the game on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Game Description:

After learning of his grandfathers mysterious death in a fire, the protagonist travels to Mundaun for the first time since childhood. He will soon discover that something old and diabolical is haunting the remaining inhabitants. The quest to find out the meaning behind these sinister events takes the player on an odyssey up Mundaun mountain: From steep meadows across stony fields and to the snow-covered peak. Mundaun is a lovingly hand-pencilled horror tale set in a dark, secluded valley of the alps. Explore various areas full of secrets to discover, survive hostile encounters, drive vehicles, fill your inventory and solve a variety of hand-crafted puzzles.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
