Daytona. Crazy Taxi. Carmageddon. Racers, in the 1980s and 1990s, were all the rage. And in an attempt to remind gamers of the past, showing the modern day player the true joy of arcade gaming, Horizon Chase Turbo is here, delivering classic adrenaline-fuelled racing for the local multiplayer gamer.
Upon booting up a race in Horizon Chase Turbo you will quickly see that this is a game that has been heavily inspired by cartoonish racers of old. Taking their own spin on colourful 16-bit visuals, developers Aquiris Game Studio have created a visually appealing racer that contains a multitude of modes, catering for many 4 player split-screen multiplayer offerings.
Furthermore, racers will be burning rubber in a number of weather conditions – torrential rain to a vicious volcanic eruption will all be out to tear you away from the task at hand… crossing the finish line in first place! And with Xbox One X Enhanced visuals such tracks will look just that little bit crisper.
The music man behind stellar names such as Lotus Turbo Challenge, Top Gear and Rush, the legendary Barry Leitch, is back composing the music for Horizon Chase Turbo, as the visuals, mechanics and audio all come together to perfectly reflect the simplistic joy of the arcade racer.
With over 109 tracks in 48 locations, World Tour, Tournament and Endurance modes to get to grips with, multiple cars with different stats, online leaderboards and of course the endless promise of bashing your friends off-course and acquiring those all-important bragging rights, Horizon Chase Turbo is shaping up to be the ultimate racer for those wanting to explore the 90s arcade racing genre.
There is now also the addition of a new Playground mode that has been added to the Xbox One and Switch editions of the game, bring a rotating competition that presents 5 new races each time. These are time-limited tracks that will always bring something special to the table: Time Attack races with no opponents, changes in weather and time of day, mirrored races, infinite nitros, restrictions on which cars competitors can use.
In Playground mode, each season brings a new set of surprises and a new place to compete – we’ll be seeing this added to the PS4 and PC versions at a later date.
Horizon Chase Turbo is available from 3pm GMT today on Xbox One for £15.99 and on Nintendo Switch for £17.99. You can also grab it on PS4 and PC.
The lights are green – away you go! And keep an eye out for our review too.
