Sonic is 30 – yep, let that sink in – and to celebrate SEGA are going big with the blue blur. And the biggest of announcements in our eyes is that of Sonic Colors: Ultimate – especially as a fully confirmed Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC release date has become known.

If you’re a fan of Sonic (and we’d expect that to be the case with a whole range of those who read our pages), then you need to get yourself set for September 7th 2021, for it is then when SEGA will push out the adrenaline-pumping upgraded Sonic Colors: Ultimate.

Taking what was great about the original iconic release from Sonic Colors in 2010, Sonic Colors: Ultimate promises to inject a fresh hue on proceedings as it delivers stunning visuals, new features, a new mode and improved gameplay enhancements. You could say that it will deliver the ultimate Sonic experience when it drops in September in both digital and physical form (excluding PC, that’s just digital through the Epic Games Store).

Sonic Colors: Ultimate will see you joining the high-speed adventure of a lifetime as you utilise Sonic’s speed to free the alien Wisps race from the clutching of Dr. Eggman. By doing so you’ll get to take in no less than six wonderful worlds, each of which will come with its own unique enemies and obstacles.

Thankfully old Sonic will come with a variety of special abilities, harnessing the power of the Wisps as he goes.

Key features include:

  • Sonic Speed and Non-Stop Action – Accelerate to adrenaline-pumping super speed, zoom across challenging worlds, and maneuver through hazardous obstacles. Time your attacks perfectly to charge your boost and reach Super Sonic speeds.
  • Interstellar Amusement Park – Explore and adventure through immersive environments, like a Sweet Mountain filled with delightful sweets or an Aquarium Park filled with sea life and countless pools – all centered around a mysterious astro-amusement park.
  • Wisp Power-ups – Transform Sonic by harnessing the magnificent alien power of Wisps to defeat enemies and discover the secrets of the interstellar amusement park. Pass through solid objects and discover alternate paths using the new Jade Ghost Wisp.
  • Better Than Ever – Available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch and now more colorful than ever with enhanced visuals and graphics, refined controls, and many more gameplay upgrades. The game is also playable on PlayStation®5 via backwards compatibility and Xbox Series X|S.
  • ‘Rival Rush’ Mode – Put your skills to the test and go head-to-head with Metal Sonic. Outrun Metal Sonic to unlock rewards!

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Where do you get the idea it’s coming to PS5? I see a PS4 logo on that trailer but not PS5.
