Capital B has returned with another devious plan. This time he has plans to take over the Royal Stingdom and use a device known as the Hivemind to control all the bees in the kingdom to do his evil bidding. What he doesn’t account for though is the return of the dynamic duo Yooka and Laylee in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair on Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
Their second feature outing – after that of the titular Yooka-Laylee – has the pair switch from a 3D platforming adventure to a 2.5D side scroller. They are called to arms by Queen Phoebee to help protect her kingdom from the evil Capital B, but to defeat him they must complete the ominously name ‘Impossible Lair.’
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair features 20 main levels which can all be modified by affecting their book in the Overworld, resulting in 40 different levels. This Overworld is crammed with secrets caves and hidden items that players can find. Find each book, complete the chapter and earn a member of the Royal Beetalion; a team of bees that provide Yooka and Laylee extra defence and chances to complete the Impossible Lair, the hardest challenge in the game.
The Impossible Lair is the final challenge but can actually be undertaken at any point in the game. Fancy a challenge? Try and beat it without any Beetalion to help you! Finding it too difficult? Try and collect all 48 Beetalion members and then take it on. The choice is yours!
If you are struggling through the main levels, then the return of Tonics will help you out. Equip up to three at a time to help change a number of things in-game: increase checkpoint frequency, keep collectibles on death, there are many to choose from. Luckily, if you are finding it too easy, then there are Tonics to help make the game even harder!
Gavin Price, Managing Director & Creative Lead, Playtonic Games, said:
“Bringing Yooka and Laylee back was a no-brainer! Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair delivers an exciting experience for fans of classic 2.5D platformers, regardless of their platform of choice. We’re really looking forward to seeing what players and our passionate community make of the duo’s second outing!”
Max Everingham, Head of Publishing, Team17, said:
“We were really excited to see what Playtonic Games came up with after the original Yooka-Laylee, and throughout development Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair has continually shown that the studio knows how to deliver excellent and innovative platform experiences. The implementation of 60fps gameplay across all platforms is a phenomenal achievement, and the ability to tackle the challenging Impossible Lair level itself right from the start of the game really throws down the gauntlet to even the most experienced gamer!”
