The handmade notebook adventures of RPG Time: The Legend of Wright scrawl onto Xbox

There are many games which hit the Xbox Store each and every week. Some are triple-A blockbusters, others little micro-indie affairs for relative pennies. And then there are games like RPG Time: The Legend of Wright – a game that we didn’t expect much from… until we watched the trailer.

Whether it be the artstyle that pulls you in to RPG Time: The Legend of Wright, or the well crafted trailer, the lore that sits behind it, the superb looking action or, well, the whole damn thing really, it doesn’t matter. This looks to be a really neat little option to have available to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players, and even though the £29.99 price tag is neither cheap enough to take a punt on, or high enough to distinguish utter quality, we feel it fits perfectly. And yes, this is currently one that we’re only seeing available to those in the North American region. We’ll update once the UK gets a launch.

From the Aniplex and DeskWorks teams, RPG Time: The Legend of Wright is a handmade notebook adventure, one that is constantly drawn in place as your actions dictate. It sees you playing through an RPG adventure that is being created by a young boy – Kenta – drawn in place as they proclaim dreams of becoming a proper game creator and developer.

It’s the artstyle that is immediately apparent here, combining muted hand-drawn stylings with a ton of colour, building out the adventure with each and every turn. There are tons of options here as well, and it’s easy to see where the fifteen years of brainstorming and nine years of game development have gone.

Should you be looking for a new adventure, we think you should look no further than RPG Time: The Legend of Wright. We’ll be sure to follow up this piece with full review thoughts in the near future, but for now you should be heading to the Xbox Store with cash in hand, hoping to take home the download that you need.

Let us know what you think too – we’d love to hear from you, whether that be in the comments or via the usual social channels.

Game Description:

It’s time for adventure! When school’s out, it’s RPG time! Let’s play an RPG that’s hand-drawn by a game-loving boy named Kenta, who drew it all on his notebook. Fun and exciting gimmicks and tricks appear every time you turn the page! In a classroom after school, the player finds themself playing an RPG created by a boy named Kenta who dreams of becoming a game creator, titled “The Legend of Wright.” While the game’s title contains the term “RPG,” players will soon find themselves playing games other than the hand-drawn RPG on a notebook: a world made from cardboard and stationary strewn across a desk will also have players play action, adventure, side-scrolling shooters, and command battle games! The game is absolutely chock full of Kenta’s playful imagination!

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
